CANOEING The year has been an extremely busy one for the paddlers. The boys have been involved fully, competing in many disciplines including, sprints, river marathons, flatwater marathons, slalom, canoe polo and K4s. The general performance of this young team is exciting and encouraging. The number of novices and U 14 boys paddling is the result of a strong marketing effor t and our boys continue to raise the profile of the spor t through their achievements. Many boys are now considering canoeing. A typical week for a Kearsney paddler includes two training sessions, a midweek time trial, inter-schools races on a Saturday and a club race on Sundays. Conservatively, the boys covered in excess of a thousand kilometres in training. Kearsney finished four th overall in the 2014 inter school league – a fantastic achievement considering nearly all our current paddlers will be back in 2015. The U 16 team, together with Rober t McConnell (U 14) and Matthew Pitcher (U 15), won the U 16 section of the enduro race at Camps Drift, signalling that 2015 could be the year that Kearsney wins the overall competition. Throughout the inter-schools races, our depth in the U 14 and U 16 age groups was evident. Kearsney has become a challenger in both age groups. The U 14s dominated the junior competition with the Kearsney boys claiming, four of the ten positions: Rober t McConnell placed four th. In the U 16 age group, both Rory McNeill and Timothy Marsh finished in the top ten: Rory four th and Timothy seventh. The Drak challenge saw seven boys head up to Underberg. In low conditions, all of the boys performed well. This was followed by the Dusi canoe marathon. Kearsney’s ten entrants was a record and all the boys completed the race. Rory McNeill and Stuar t McCleave finished second in the U 16 category. 122 CANOEING CANOEING Back row: C Davis, P Kirby, T Marsh, R McConnell, G Keeley, S McCleave, L Sandy, C Stevens 2nd row: T Findlay, G Phillips, D Smith, M Pitcher, W Saxby, M Buccimazza Front row: L Plotts, J Cahi, P Hudson, Mr S Main (coach), K Loader, E Knight With grateful thanks: “Wherever life should take you, keep your connection to Durban with a Spider Surf Board from Safari.
