Chronicle-2014

131 CRICKET U 15A It was an honour and privilege to coach this talented group of boys. On the field they played tough, uncompromising cricket with a real desire to win convincingly. Their results attest to a season in which they took on the best and showed their mettle in the heat and dust of confrontation and conflict. Truly gladiatorial with bat and ball, these focused and disciplined young men enjoyed an impressive season in which every player contributed significantly in his area of exper tise. It was this collective effor t and an enviable team spirit which allowed them to win games against much more fancied opposition. Captain Luke de Vlieg and vice-captain Patrick McGrath ran a very tight ship. Phenomenal parental suppor t also played a major par t in team motivation and for that I am very grateful. Highlights include both wins against Maritzburg College; beating Grey College Bloemfontein andWynberg on tour and dispatchingWestville with its contingent of provincial players. A game which illustrated the tenacity and true grit of this side was the declaration game against Michaelhouse. After a fighting rear-guard action from tail-enders Jack Potter and Blaise Carmichael, Kearsney managed 179. At 179/7 and scores tied, it seemed that Michaelhouse would get the runs necessary for victory. Instead, Kearsney tied the game by removing the final three batsmen for no runs: a truly remarkable game! They were positive and encouraging of one another and the team was ably led by Luca Ferri. Although there is much talent in this group, often the boys did not fire on the same day with the result that they did not do as well as their talent would have suggested they should. However this was rectified in the last match in which Luca won the toss and decided to bat first. Whether it was the lack of chasing pressure, or simply a good day, many of the batsmen came to the par ty and we put on a score of 269 against St Charles which we easily defended.
