Chronicle-2014

135 CROSS country The focus is to develop a love for exercise and the outdoors. The spor t caters for the fast and the slow – exercising not only the legs but also the hear t, lungs and mind. The College is blessed with a number of very hardworking, talented and enthusiastic runners. Cross Country has enjoyed four to five practices a week this year including an outing onWednesdays and Saturdays. This gave the boys the oppor tunity to do plenty of trail running though the Giba and Kloof gorges and to run knee-deep through the waves at the beach. There were also occasional speed and hill training sessions. On Tuesday nights the boys ran the time trial with the Kearsney Striders running club. This exposed them to the wisdom of a number of experienced Comrades runners and once a month we also joined the Striders for a post-run braai. In the second term we par ticipated in the inter schools Cross Country league and performed extremely well. Our U 17 age group dominated the league with Jabulani Nyathi,Wade Ambrose and Sibulelo Mbhele leading the attack. The inter house Cross Country event was tightly contested. Jabulani Nyathi won the 6 kilometre senior race breaking the previous record in a time of 23:16. Unfor tunately, seven boys in the 4.5 kilometre junior race were directed the wrong way but, after giving these boys a chance to race again, Daniel Taylor came out on top. Daniel, who is only in grade 9, went on to beat the seniors in the 5000 metre athletics event in the third term. 2015 is set to be a very exciting year for Cross Country. We begin the year with the 10 kilometre Kearsney Striders race in January. In March we intend to tackle Thomas More’s 80 kilometre long walk which will dominate the training in the first term. We also expect to dominate the inter schools’ league in the second term. Lastly, we hope to spend a weekend running in the Berg. I have loved coaching the spor t and training with the boys with whom I have developed strong friendships. I thank each of them for this privilege and look forward to next year. For the love of running!
