163 SOCCER 1ST XI The team had a great season, scoring 21 goals and only conceding 11 in 15 games. The team was very experienced as the regular star ting line-up consisted of 10 matrics, 6 of whom played in the 2013 season. The boys were eager to perform this season and worked hard at the practices. We par ticipated in the Kloof festival during the July holidays and finished second in our group. In the championship phase we played well but were not successful. The regular season games were hard-fought affairs and the team relied on a clean passing game as well as a resolute defence. We managed to defeat Hilton and Michaelhouse convincingly and other highlights include a tough 1 – 0 victory at Nor thwood and beating local rivals Westville 2 – 1 on the Stott in the season finale. Whilst goals did not come easily, the team stuck to the task at hand and produced some moments of brilliance. In only conceding 11 goals, the pride of wearing the 1st XI jersey, accompanied by a strong will and desire to defend the net, were all obvious. The matric boys will be greatly missed and their effor ts at practices during trials is appreciated. Special mention must be made of Langa Hlongwane, who captained the side and led by example. His dedication to the team and willingness to help others was a trademark of his excellent leadership. He was the most valuable player in the team. Our thanks are also extended to Wayne Amos, whose love and dedication to the game had an immediate impact upon the team.
