Chronicle-2014

172 SQUASH With only one matric in the 1st team, the side was made up of largely U 16 players who worked hard at their games and improved significantly. The term began with our annual tour to the St Andrews FNB festival in Bloemfontein. The boys came up against tough opposition from the best schoolboy teams in the country, achieving the following results: vs Grey PE lost 5 – 1 vs St Andrews won 5 – 1 vs St Stithians won 4 – 2 vs St Albans won: 5 – 1 In the first term we par ticipated in the KZN top 8 series. Our results were as follows: vsWestville lost 5 – 3 vs Glenwood lost 5 – 3 vs Hilton: won 5 – 3 vs Michaelhouse lost 5 – 3 vs St Charles won 5 – 3 vs Maritzburg College won 5 - 3 In the second term Kearsney par ticipated in the southern coastals schools league against most of the schools in Durban, fielding seven teams across five leagues. This made for a very busy Monday afternoon but ensured that we got all our players out on the cour t. We also competed in the KZN inter schools tournament and placed third overall. Kearsney had boys’ teams in the Durban mens’ league which gave the boys an oppor tunity to pit their strengths against some more wily opposition. We entered teams in the second and sixth divisions and the boys competed well. Special thanks are extended to Etienne Grundling who played in and managed the sixth division. During the third term we hosted the Durban jesters, an annual fixture which brings some past greats up the Hill. This proved an exciting fixture and the boys managed to upstage their more mature opposition, coming out narrow victors. We also hosted the annual ‘Rodder cup’ against a team of old boys, who managed to retain the trophy this year. Thanks are extended to Mar ten Corfe for his help in arranging both of these traditional fixtures. In the four th term we made our annual pilgrimage to theWynberg stayers’ festival in Cape Town. This is always a wonderful oppor tunity for our younger players to step onto the cour t with other up and coming stars. In 2013 we were the youngest team there and it was exciting to see the improvement our boys made during the year. Our results were as follows: vsWynberg won 4 – 2 vs Bishops won 4 – 2 vs Grey High lost 4 – 2 vs Pretoria Boys lost 5 – 2 vs SACS won 5 – 1 The side came back inspired for the 2015 season in which Kearsney will embark on an overseas tour to Malaysia and Singapore. Special mention should be made of the 2014 captain, Joshua Prinn, who was a reliable and dedicated captain who served in the 1st team for five years. It has been a pleasure to coach and play alongside this talented group of players who continue to improve year upon year. Andy Morgan Squash Kearsney enjoyed a very busy and competitive squash season this year.
