Chronicle-1940

There was a good deal of anticipatory excitement over the 94% eclipse of the sun on October 1st, but the event was spoilt for us by the fact that the afternoon was so dark and cloudy that it was hardly possible to realise that there was an eclipse at all. We must now wait patiently for about half a century for the next one! Sports Day was an outstanding success. The weather was perfect right through, if rather too hot, and everything went without a hitch. Even if we cannot hold him respon sible for the weather, we must once more congratulate Mr. Medworth for the thoroughness of the preparations, and the high standard of sport attained. Although the two Houses are built to accommodate only 60 each, there have been so many applications for entry forms for the coming year that considerable structural alterations are being made during the Christmas holidays, so that 70 may be accommodated in each. For the first time in the school's history, the Headmaster has a waiting list! Our sister school, Epworth, has now closed down in its old premises, and in February starts a new era in its fine new buildings at Scottsville. We hope (and expect) that before long Miss Church will also have a waiting list! The following boys left at the end of the year: R. Mark (Head Prefect and Rugger Captain), L. Jordan- (Head of Gillingham), G. Boyd (Cricket Captain), D. French, E. Groom R. Lund, D. Crowder (all Prefects), L. Scheffer, R. J. McLaren, M. McBean, L. N. Putetrill, S. H, Spargo. Congratulations to G. Boyd on being the first Kearsney boy to find a place in the Natal Schools' XI. His lefthand bowling during the Schools' week was always dan gerous, and in the match against Natal he was the side's most successful bowler. We wish him luck during the Nuffield week. We acknowledge the following contemporaries: High bury School Magazine; Maritzburg College Magazine. School Calendar:— Third Term: August 1st to October 4th. Fourth Term: October 14th to December 6th. 51
