Chronicle-1961

SHOOTING It has been a great disappointment that there has been no range shooting at all this year. Our .22 rifles were returned for a brief period, but were again recalled as an emergency precaution. As shooting has been an activity in which we have excelled in the past, we hope that adequate arrangements for the safe storage of the rifles can be made next year. ANNUAL INSPECTION The detachment was privileged to be inspected by the O.C. Natal Command, Colonel Eraser, this year. Colonel Eraser com mented very favourably on turn-out, steadiness on parade and the marching of the Detachment. He commended the Band on their performance both at the Band Competition and on the Inspection Parade. He alsoexpressed the hope that more Enghsh-speaking boys would consider making the Army their career, because there was an acute shortage of qualified instructors in the services—a situation had been made even more serious by the extended period of military training. After the Inspection he expressed the wish to watch a demon stration by the Judo Club and by a team going through the Com mando Course. We should like to take this opportunity ofthanking Mr.B. du Toit for all his assistance in pioneering this course. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY The year's Cadet activities culminated in our Annual Remem brance Sunday Parade. The whole Detachment is to be congratu lated on an excellent paradewhich was worthy of the occasion. After a most impressive Service in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Sudbury, wreaths were laid at the Memorial Plaque at the Pavilion, by Mr. D. R. Nightingale, on behalf ofthe Old Boys and by S.O. M.H. Smith, on behalf of the College. J. H.Hopkins, Major. 136
