Chronicle-1961

SPORTS DAY We were fortunate in having fine weather for Sports Day, al though a thunder storm which had been brewing all day, broke as the trophies were being presented. Rain over-night made the track heavy especially during the morning. Despite this disadvantage there were some good per formances and some keenly contested finishes. Fortunately the track dried out appreciafbolry the distance events in the afternoon. Ten records were estabUshed ina day of keen competition. That no fewer than four of these were relays indicates the high standard of general performance. High Jump Under 13; P.Strydorn,4ft. ins. 220 yds. Under 13: E. Ashby,27.4 sees. Long Jump Under 14: G.Lindeque,17 ft. 2\ins. 440 yds. Under 16^: T. Beckett, 53.6 sees. Mile Under 16i: T.Beckett,4 min. 55.5 sees. Javelin Open: A.Procter, 169 ft. 6^ ins. Finningley built up an early lead in the morning and by lunch appeared to be in a comfortable position. After lunch, however, thanks to their successes in the 880 yds. Mile and Relay events, Pembroke staged a strong recovery,so that it was only in the closing stages that Finningley managed to make sure of the Oliver Pearce Trophy. Final points were as follows: Finningley 273^,Pembroke 25li, Gillingham 179. Once again we had the pleasure of entertaining a large and appreciative crowd of parents and friends on an occasion which has become a feature in our annual calendar. We are most grateful to Mr. Kingsley Oliver for giving up his time and for defying the elements in order to present our trophies at the end of the day. In conclusion we should hke to express our appreciation to: The officials and the Athletic Committee; Mrs. Osier and the ladies for arranging the teas; Mrs. Ireland and the catering staff for an excellent lunch; Mr. Montague and the grounds staff for their work on the track, PROGRAMME 75 yds.
