Chronicle-1977

Open age group and in particular the 1st XV and 3rd XV, which lost only 1 game, augurs well for the future. The 1st XV had a very successful season, though not without their off days. Undoubtedly the tour to East Griqualand during the Easter vacation provided a most suitable incentive, and early preparation for the season, and we thank our hosts for their kindness and hospitality. The fact that only E. Hohls reached the final Natal Schools' Trial shows that this was not a team of stars. Rather, it had a few weaknesses. The team played entertaining, driving rugby, spoilt only by the number of penalties they conceded (36 scored against). On the other hand, the fact that they succeeded in converting only 1 1 penalties proves the kicking was not up to scratch. Nevertheless, to lose only 4 games out of 20, is no mean feat, and we congratulate them. During the last week of the 1st term we introduced an Inter-House Seven-a-Side Tournament with House teams in each age group participating. It was a great success and helped both player and coach with their pre-season preparation. The Annual Rugby Dinner was held during the 3rd term and we were happy to have with us the Kingswood Touring Team and Mr Ray Carlson, Natal's OrganiserCoach,as Guest Speaker. An enjoyable evening was had by all. We record our thanks to the following: Members of the Durban Referees'Society; Mr C. Jeannot for his meticulous arrangements;Mr R. Blackbeard and his catering staft; Mr D. Milbank, the drivers and the ground staff; Sisters Beaton and Warne;the Matrons; the orange and ball boys and the scorers; and of course the coaches for their time and effort in the interests of rugby.
