Carrington Trophy (for the most improved player): K. de Villiers * re-award The two new courts, completed early in February, have unquestionably benefitted squash at Kearsney insofar as all the match-playing teams have met with gratifying success. In interschool competition, the 1st team lost only to the very strong Michaelhouse team (twice) and to Hilton, narrowly, three times out of four matches but, on two of these occasions, the No. 1 (Whiting) was absent. The Under l5Vi A and Under 14'/2 A teams lost only to Michaelhouse and the 2nd, Under \ S'A B and Under lAvi B teams suffered only one defeat between them. In other respects, however, the response to the new courts has been extremely disappointing. The actual (not relative) number of court-hours per week in the 2nd term (outside of official practices and matches) used was lower than it has ever been before and throughout most of the year bookings for the former peak reservation period of 5-6 p.m. have fallen off unbelievably — for some weeks to as little as 11% of the play ing periods available at those times. However, this disturbing trend has been offset by the rapid growth of women's squash at Kearsney thanks largely to the great enthusiasm of mesdames Nan Townshend and Pippa Bromley-Gans. This year, for the first time, they fielded two league teams and regular practices on Wednesday mornings and Thurs day nights were very well attended. A third women's side league is envisaged for 1978. 49
