Chronicle-1977

In the 1st team. Whiting haJ some outstanding wins. If he had been a little more consistent he would have played No. 3 for the Natal Schools team but, by virtue of some upset defeats, he actually played No. 5 for the team which lost the Schoolboys interprovincial teams championship (for the first time) to the powerful Rhodesian side in Pretoria in August. Ward was an excellent captain and much of the credit for the high morale of the team goes to him. His squash improved all the way through the season and he was unlucky not to be able to accompany Shuker to Pretoria in the Natal Schools'B'team. Shuker's squash also matured markedly as the season progressed. The other regular 1st team members, Garlick, Landau and Scully, generally gave of their best, which was a good standard of squash, and all of them had some good wins. In the Open and Under IS'/i divisions of the Durban and Districts schoolboys championships, Kearsney filled second, third and fourth places in both with B. Whiting, R. Ward and B. Shuker(Open)and M. Thiselton, K. de Villiers and A. Deenik (Under ISVi), respectively. In the Natal Schools championships. Whiting(seeded 3)went out in the 'i-finals at Michaelhouse to the Michaelhouse No. 2(seeded 6) while in the provin cial Under IS'/j individual championships played for the first time this year,M. Thiselton and K. de Villiers did well enough to gain selection for the Natal 'B' team which took part in the Under 15'/2 interprovincial tournament at Cabana Beach in July. In that event, the Natal 'A' and 'B' teams finished second and third, respectively, out ofseven provincial teams. On September 9, a strong Old Boys combination easily retained the Rodda Trophy by beating the 1st VIII by 6 matches to 2. A pleasing development in Natal Schools squash this year was the appearance for the first time of a team from an Afrikaans school. The A.H.D.N. team paid two visits here where they played against graded Kearsney teams to gain experience. The following played two or more matches for the school's'A' teams in 1977:- IST TEAM: G.R. Garlick (16 matches), R.J. Hudson (3), E.H. Landau (11), W.J.C. Scully (12), B.G. Shuker (14), M.A. Thiselton (4), R.J. Ward (17), B.G. Whiting (13). UNDER IS'/i'A' TEAM: R.H. Browne (6 matches), A.
