Chronicle-1978

An interesting feature of this year's 1st XI was that it had no stars but each man gave of his best. Dunlop played consistently well as an opening bat and kept the side amused with his antics. The majority of our runs were scored by Whiting, Shuker and Miller. Whiting added to his superb fielding and batting achievements by also producing some commend able medium pace bowling. He thus thoroughly deserved the trophy for the best allrounder. Whitfield was the chief wicket-taker this year. His pace often devastated the opposition batting and he has been a real asset to the side. He was well supported by Beath and Hudson. Lewthwaite again showed his skill as a left-arm spinner and towards the end of the season proved that he could also bat very well. Mungle(winner of the Foss bat for the most improved player) was an Under 1 S'/i A team member who was brought up into the 1 St XI during the fourth quarter and who scored an excellent 59 in his first innings. The able and attacking captaincy of Shuker has contributed greatly to the success of this team. His quiet efficient and controlled manner has been an example to all. It is with great pleasure that I thank all the parents who supported this team for their help and interest and to record our gratitude to the 1st XI scorer, Prentice, who did the job so willingly, efficiently and neatly. Offord week presented a great challenge to Kearsney this year because we knew we had several players in with a chance of selection for the Natal Schools team. The challenge then was for the rest of the team to support them. The team played with great enthusiasm and spirit and gave of their best at all times. We were naturally elated when three of our players, Shuker, Miller and Whitfield, were among the top 22 players chosen for the final trials. Eventually, Shuker (who was 32
