Chronicle-1978

A. Bath - Hooker. A very solid player who tried very hard indeed. Seeing that hooking was new to him, I think he did well. Being a strong lad he was the middle-man in a very powerful front rank, giving a great shove. C. Heath — 8th man. As the season progressed so his play improved. One of the features of his game was the way he learned how to control the rolling ball; his tackling also came on a long way this year. Should be a real force at the base of the scrum next year. R. du Toit — Flank. Probably the fittest man on the field and a tireless worker. Fast around the field, his supporting play, foraging for the ball and his tackling were all ofa very high standard. He should go a long way in this game if he continues to play after leaving school. Colours. P. Dyson — Lock.An honest worker in the scrums and our only real line-out man.He had the misfortune to be injured early in the season and so he had to work especially hard to get back into the team again after a lay-off ofa month. This he did with great success. G. Green — Full-back. A steady player who enjoyed joining the line to create an overlap for the wing. Still has a bit to learn about positional play. G. Haird - Centre. A reliable player but a shade too slow off the mark. Ended the season playing at full-back, where his excellent tackling saved many a try. C. Hopkins — Tight-head prop. A very strong scrummager indeed who did sterling work for the team. A dedicated player. Should be a great force next year. Natal Schools Honours. R. Hudson — Wing. A player who always gave of his best. He was a tireless worker on cover defence. If he had had a bit more pace he would have been a great wing. C. Lewthwaite — Centre. He really matured as a player this year. His attacking play has always been good, and this season his tackling improved tremendously. Not even a broken hand could keep him out of the game. Top points scorer for the team. Should go a long way in the game if he plays after leaving school. Colours. C. Rattray - Centre. A most reliable player. Good on both attack and defence, especially the latter. His supporting play was ajoy to see. A strong lad who should do well when he leaves school. Colours. B. Shuker - Scrum-half. Small in stature but great in heart. His play was of a very high standard, notably his tackling. However, it was as a captain that he was outstanding... intelligent, giving praise, encouragement or a flea in the ear as, and when, necessary. He was able to "read" a game and then direct his team's efforts effectively. A lot of credit for the team's success belongs to him. Colours. P. Sievers - Loose-head prop. A strong lad and a good scrummager who, with Hopkins, formed a grand base for the rest of the scrum. Got through a lot of good work in the rucks and mauls. His sense of humour was often felt when things got hetic on the field. Colours. R. Small - Wing. He hasjust kept on improving this season. A good tackier and one who, when he has the ball, likes nothing better than to pin his ears back and go for the goalline. He has scored many fine tries this year. Should do very well next year. Colours. M. Underwood - Flank. A strong lad, very good in the tight-loose. His ability to rob an opposing player of the ball was a feature of his play; also his supporting of the ball. Should do well in senior rugby. B. Whiting — Fly-half. Started the season at fullback. Kept improving and ended up play ing good rugby. Possesses a devastating place-kick and is a natural ball-player. 45
