Chronicle-1978

longer than 1 hour a day.The famous Botha's Hill weather and the many school activities with which the boys are involved are the major stumbling blocks. There is little we can do in regard to the weather but we are hoping that the inter-house cricket will be arranged in such a way that it is not going to interfere with the swimmers' training programmes in 1979 as it did during this past season. Despite all the trials and tribulations of the past season we congratulate our swimmers on their effort and the spirit in which they kept up a hard pressed swimming programme, with special mention for the Captain and the Vice Captain. INTER SCHOOLS GALAS: We swam mini galas against D.H.S. and Northlands which we lost, and against Glenwood, Hilton, Maritzburg College and Alexandra High which we won. In the Durban and Districts Senior Boys'A' Gala we came fourth to D.H.S., Northlands and Glenwood. We did not do as wellin this gala as we usually do for two reasons. Firstly we have a number of cricket players in this team to give us the needed depth who,due to the pressure of their cricket fixtures, we were unable to get hold of this season to teach them how to start and turn correctly so they lost valuable ground on starts and turns. We hope to run a championship gala next year on a house system rather like we do the standards. From this gala we will be able to pick a school team for the Inter High before we hold the school gala. We will then have more time to fit those boys who do not normally swim, into training sessions where we can teach them these skills. The second reason we did not do as well as in the past is our weak Under 13 group. We came last in every Under 13 event except one, and as each place counts for a point this was a great handicap, there being a 6 point difference between 1st and last. The last but not the least in this section is our co-ed gala at Epworth. Coupled with Collegiate we beat Epworth/Alexandra High 'B'and St Annes/Alexandra High 'A'. It was the most enjoyable gala of the season, the boys all agree on that. Thank you, Epworth. TRIANGULAR GALA We won this gala again this year but with a much reduced lead compared to last year. Michaelhouse and Hilton tied for second place which made the gala very exciting. Our divers had a field day, winning both the senior and junior events for the first time. DURBAN &DISTRICT GALA We congratulate the following for being chosen to represent Durban South at the Natal Schools championships. C. Cleator and R. Hoole were chosen to represent Natal Schools at the South African Schools Championships. In the field of diving we congratulate G. Garlick and A. Tonetti on representing Durban Schools at the Natal championships. A. Tonetti was chosen to represent Natal Schools at the South African Schools Champion ships. This gave Kearsney 3 boys with Natal Schools Swimming Colours this year. SCHOOL SWIMMING GALA This year saw one of the most exciting^galas possible.
