Stanley Preece (48-52) writes: "My eldest brother Jimmy, who also attended the College, and I are in business together in Pretoria, running an Electrical Wholesale Company, which needless to say we find most stimulating and time consuming. Both of us, together with our other brother Raymond, sailed to the U.K. on the last voyage of the mailship Windsor Castle in September of last year, and then spent two weeks tour ing the U.K. and Wales before returning home. The voyage was really very memorable, but we were all very pleased to return home to out dutiful wives and families who had remained behind." P.G. (Peter) Rodda (49-54) writes; "I continue to live cheerfully in cosmopolitan Shepherds Bush, London, and am active in 'Fringe' or 'Alternative' theatre. Last year I was invited to write a one act play for The Royal Court Work.shop and came up with 'Tiger's Night', a light-hearted play hoping to make some serious points. It went well. I've been doing some teaching of English to foreign students, but am now working on a commi ssion for a play about Steve Biko. J.C.(Jerry) Smith (62-67)writes:"On leaving Kearsney at the end of 1967, I was hustled off to Walvis Bay where I completed my 9 months military training. Thereafter I began my varsity career, at Pietermaritzburg, and kicked off with an attempt at B.Sc. but after a while I realised I was not at all scientifically minded. So, at the beginning of 1971, I set out on a new course and began my career in law. I became articled to a firm of attorneys in Pietermaritzburg, commencing with a salary of R40 per month, when my board and lodging came to R40 per month!. I wouldn't have survived without the help of senior articled clerk friends, and I am now patronising the poverty-stricken swabs, who have just begun their articles. "In any event, after serving 5 years of articles(my salary improved gradually), 1 was eventually admitted as an attorney in August 1976 and have been practising as such in Pietermaritzburg ever since. However, I found myself on the border with the Natal Carbineers for a three months stretch, which was not entirely pleasant, and detrimental to my work. Anyway, we all managed to come back safely. "As far as sport is concerned, 1 began playing hockey in Matric at Kearsney, and 1 am still enjoying the sport completely. Funnily enough, Johnny Lowe (ex-Spring bok and ex-Kearsney) was our coach then and these days 1 meet him as opposition in league clashes. Over and above that 1 enjoy the odd social game of rugby, cricket and squash. "On the cultural side, I have become a member of the local Jaycees Chapter, although 1 must admit 1 have not been very active to date due to lack of time. Much of my spare time is taken up with amateur acting, as I have joined a local amateur group called 'Herald Players' and to date 1 have appeared in a number of their produc tions. "My brother Tim (63-68) is also in Pietermaritzburg, doing well for himself as he qualified as a doctor at the beginning of the year and is practising at Edendale, a local non-European hospital." E.C.(Earle)Smith (27-34) was due to retire on pension at the end of September and within a day or two there after he and his wife were to be leaving for an overseas holiday, returning shortly before Christmas. Thereafter he expects to be able to settle down to do the many things that he has never had time to do in the past and anticipates being most active. K.B. His son Jimmy (68-70) has done extremely well at practical pistol (combat) shoot ing this year. He was chosen as number one for South Africa when they shot against Rhodesia. His successes this year have been: Winner of N. Transvaal champion ship; Overall winner of International against Rhodesia; Second in Rhodesia championship; Winner of S.A. Championship; and Winner of Natal championship. He looks forward to the World Championships which are to be held in South Africa next year. 91
