Chronicle-1983

vs GLENWOOD: Lost 12-22 Kearsney began in superb fashion, scoring a converted try and a penalty to go 9-0 up. The loose-play and tackling kept Glenwood under pressure and it appeared the home side was on the road to an unexpected victory. Kearsney ran out of steam and Glenwood took full advantage, running out convincing winners, scoring 2 tries in the dying minutes of the game. vsWESTVILLE : Lost 6-12 It was a lacklustre effort by Kearsney. Quicker to the ball and enterprising, fast elusive running by the nippy backs, saw Westville score 3 tries to Dunlop's 2 penalties for Kearsney. vs D H S:Won 12-7 Kearsney left their finest display to the last interschool fixture of 1983. Fine tackling by Oliver, Taylor, Craig and Elliot; some elusive running by Sutton, strong scrummaging by Jones, Alcock, Engelbrecht and Eraser, saw the home side play with a confidence only seen in flashes during the season. Not intimidated by a strong, heavy DHS pack, saw victory come with a scintillating try by centre MacFatlane, initiated by Sutton in his own half, carried on by Oliver and Craig, the ball changing hands 5 or 6 times. A fine try to end the season. vs OLD BOYS: Lost 15-34 The Old Boys fielded a very strong team indeed, with several players making a significant impact in the Natal U20 and Senior Natal Rugby ranks. Bigger, stronger and more skilful, they denied the schoolboys any opportunity to dominate any phase of the game. The boys never gave up and threw the ball around at every opportunity to con tribute to a fine game of rugby, played in a good spirit. F.P.D. COCKS Coach 2nd XV CAPTAIN: M.Boyd VICE-CAPTAIN: B. Summary of Season: Lack of many basic skills limited the teams potential to achieve a good standard of attacking rugby. In many games,- especially in the latter half of the season, the committed rugby displayed by the side was unfortunately not reward ed due to an inability to cross the opponents line. This commitment, which was particularly apparent against our stronger opponents at the end of the season, made the season, if not statistically successful, a satisfying and re warding one.
