The swimmers certainly improved in the course of the year, doing some of the most intensive training I have seen from Kearsney pupils. This was largely due to the enormous enthusiasm of Mr Van Loggerenberg, who I would like to thank for all his effort. Despite the hard work, it was not enough to win the triangular against Hilton and Michaelhouse. Our divers were not able to compete because of motor vehicle problems, and the points we lost as a result made all the difference. Later however, we showed our strength in the Maritzburg and Districts Gala in which we competed for the first time. On the swimming alone, we came third to Maritzburg College and a composite side selected from inland co educational schools. Indeed, this gala proved to be the highlight of the season, and it produced some fine perfor mances. At the Boys 'A' Gala in Durban, we swam well enough to gain fifth place. Beachwood once again were a fraction stronger that we were, and they beat us by two points. I should like to thank swimming Captain David Taylor for his fine organisation of the team, especially at our regular Saturday morning galas. Individual swimmers did well, although the depth of ability that we needed was not always there. H. Dowdall, P. van der Schyff and C. Comins were selected to swim for Durban and Districts — well done. Our guest of honour at the inter-house gala this year was Mr Storm. While we know him as our Deputy Headmaster, he is known to those outside the school as 'Mr Swimming' of South African schools. He presented the following trophies: U13 Fearnhead Cup: C.
