MAINTENANCE We are in the process of attending to the general mainte nanceofthe building.Alist has been submitted to the school to ascertain what they are able to do and when.There are numerous minor items outside the scope of the school maintenance team which we are undertaking ourselves as funds permit. The building is scheduled to be repainted by the school in the 4th quarter. Neville Maytom(68-71) Graduated B.Sc(Med)in 1974 at UCTfollowed by M.B. Ch B in1979. Specialised in Ophthalmology and special ised in 1986. After 31 years in the R.A.E. and 2 with Brit ish Aerospace,he plans to retire after 14 years as Clerk of the Saddlers'Company-one ofthe oldest(c.ll60)ofthe livery companies of the City of London. RNYCSAILOR IS SOUTH AFRICAN MIRROR CHAMPION Thirty-two Mirror dinghies from the Cape,Transvaal and Natal converged on Saldanha Bay to sail the South Afri can Mirror National Championship Regattafrom the 28th ofDecemberto the 2nd ofJanuary 1994.The Western Prov ince,the host province,had promised good winds and fair sailing; a promise well kept as the wind uncharacteristi cally blew a constant 20 to 30 knots with no break. From the very first race Mark Gunning set his mark on the Regatta eventually winning all six races making him a truly worthy champion.On the water he did not have it all his own way having to fight offsome serious challengesfrom the Western province and from his own province. Mark Gunning started sailing while at Kearsney College and literally worked his way upfrom the back ofthe fleet. He first made his mark on sailing in 1989 where he took 3rd place in the Mirrorfleet at the Natal JuniorProvincials. He wenton to win this class in the Natal Junior Provincials in 1991-1992.He wasawarded his Junior Natal Colours in 1993 and was awarded full Blues for sailing by the Natal University Pietermaritzburg in the same year. It was not until 1993 that Mark won the Natal Senior Mir ror Provincials having come third in 1991 and second in 1992. He was also placed 2nd in the Transvaal Mirror Provincials in 1992. Hisfirsttwo Mirror Nationals were sailed in 1988 and 1989 when he obtained indifferent places, but in 1990 he was 106
