Chronicle-1993

Basketball Basketball at Kearsney is a growing sport. The number of boys playing the sport is increasing all the time and it is encouraging to see that both the number playing in repre sentativeteams and the number ofthose playing informally have increased markedly. All of the players show great enthusiasm in developing their skills and knowledge of the sport. The 1st team had mixed fortunes this year in terms of re sults. By winning half the fixtures, they were able to sus tain enough enthusiasm and confidence when coming up againstfar betterteamsthan themselves.Owing to the rela tively small size of the team, fast passing and the use of the "fast break"became the team's main strengths.Shoot ing remained a weakness throughout the season-essen tial when unable to penetrate the key. On the whole, each player developed in his skills during the season-and the difference between the beginning and the end ofthe season in terms of"team skills" wasencour aging. I am sure that their enjoyment ofthe sport at school will ensure that many ofthe players will continue playing the sport after their matric year. R.NOTT UNDER-15and UNDER-14BASKETBALL The Under-15 and Under-14 age groups are a vital train ing ground for basketball at Kearsney. We were able to run separate Under-15 and Under-14 age groups in the first term but had to combine in the fourth term after losing a coach to another sport. It was really encouraging to see so many new players and to observe how quickly and enthu siastically they learned the basic skills. Some of the Un der-15 players who have played for several years have reached a very high level of individual skill; the result of many hours of extra practice over the weekends and in their own free time. With the increasing publicity that basketball is now receiv ing in ourcountry the future for some ofour players could be very exciting indeed. Who knows whether the next MagicJohnson wasnotin the Under-15 and Under-14ranks in 1993. D.CATO Cricket 1ST XI Captain: S. Hatzipetrou Vice Captain: S. Fraser CRITIQUE OFTHEPLAYERS Stacey Hatzipetrou(Opening Bat). Captain; Honours; Natal Schools'A Opening Batsman. Stacey enjoyed a successful year, scoring the most runs and heading the batting averages. He had a phenomenal first quarter, playing his natural, flowing game. The high light wasa brilliant 111 against Westville.Hedid not quite get his game together in the last quarter. Nevertheless he still managed in most games to get the team offto a solid start. He was rewarded by being selected for the Natal Schools XIfor Nuffield Week. Simon Fraser(Number4 Bat). Vice-Captain; Colours(Re-award) Simon was definitely the mosttalented batsman in the First XI.He mustjust believe more in himselfand he could go places. His 57 against Maritzburg College was the high light of his year. Roy Drew(All-rounder). Colours Royenjoyed agood year with both batand ball.Heproved to be a pillar of strength at number 3,always chipping in with a nuggety 30 to 40 runs. As a first change medium pacer, his accuracy and tirelessness proved invaluable to the team and he was one ofthose bowlers who very often ended up taking a valuable wicket to swing a game as he did in the game against Michaelhouse in the fourth quar ter. Jonathan Mackey(Opening Bat). Jonathan was a newcomer to the side and in the games he did open for the team he did so very effectively. He was one ofthose serious students of the game. His innings of 43 against Kloof proved to be a match-winning one for Kearsney.Ilookforward to a successful 1994 with him as Captain. Daniel Verbaan(All-rounder). Colours Daniel was one of those players the team could always rely on in difficult circumstances. Despite a limitation in shots,he always somehow managed to come in and either rescue or win a gamefor the team. The highlights were his knock of46 against a Pretoria XI and 26 against Kloofto win the gamefor Kearsney. He was also a valuable seamer for the team, very often taking a crucial wicket when the team needed it most. Andrew Tindall (All-rounder). Honours, Natal Schools BXI Andrew enjoyed an outstanding year with both bat and ball.He developed into a genuinely quick opening bowler very often demolishing the opposition by taking5 wickets or more.As a batsman he also had the ability to take any attack apart and in so doing very often swung the game in the team's favour. He was rewarded with the best all rounder of the First XI award for 1993 as well. Iain Ewing(Lower middle order batsman). Colours Iain was a very good team man in the sense that he very often had to come in to bat with few overs to go and the run chase on.He unselfishly got on with this, seldom fail ing and alwayscontributing a brisk 20odd in double-quick time. On two occasions he was called upon to open the innings and did so with success againstCollege and Hilton. His hard work in the game, was the essence ofhis success and may he continue to do so in future. Kevin Arenhold(Opening bowler). Colours Kevin was one of those players a team could always do with in a tight situation-a 120 percenter all the time.As an opening bowler,he was mosteffective, very often mak ing the crucial breakthrough. He had 2outstanding spells, which swung the game Kearney's way - against Michaelhouse and againstAlexandra. In the field he never gave up and,as a number 11,he even won a game for his team against Pinetown. 60
