Pinetown 81(McDougal 7/20) Won by 92 runs 3RD XI Captain: R.Dunster Vice Captain:A.Simonsz Those who played three or more matches for the 3rd XI during 1993 were: R. Dunster(10 matches),A.Simonsz (11),G.Allen(12),L.Archary(7),M.Evans(13),J.Francis (3),G.Hunter(4),E.Larson(10),D.Mundell(7),S.Picken (5),S.Rutherford(13),M.Taylor(5),G.Thomson(3),G. Uren(11),R.Whitehead(7),R.Williams(13). After a very promising 1st term, when they lost only once - in the last match -to the very strong D.H.S side, this team had a disastrous final term prior to the lasttwo games when they vindicated themselves to some extent. After los ing again to D.H.S.in a limited overs match at the start of the 4th term they proceeded to lose the next three in a row before, atlong last, scoring afine away win against Hilton. In the 4th term the team seemed unableto co-ordinate their efforts. Against Maritzburg College, dismissed for a mod erate total on alightning fast outfield, the batting wasabys mal, only the 10th wicket pair of Larson and Archary putting a little bit ofrespectability to the innings.1 cannot remember seeing before such an abjectcapitulation shown by the rest ofthe hatting on that occasion. Against a weak Glenwood side, when a far more positive approach to the batting was produced, the team paid the penalty for palpably assuming that it was all over(in our favour) with Glenwood reeling at 84 for 8 still requiring 55 runs to win.By then bowling the proverbial"shower", weallowed our plucky opponentsto steal the limited overs match by 1 wicket! In fairness to the team it must, however,be said that it was weakened by a number ofsenior boys who played cricket in the 1stterm pulling outofthe game in the 4th-contrary to school policy. It is a selfish attitude and should not be allowed to happen again in the future. Dunster proved to be a capable and very enthusiastic cap tain ofthe team(apartfrom his short period in the 2nd XI) and led by example especially in the successful 1st term. While there were a number of good individual inningses played, there was no batsman in the side who could be consistently relied upon, with the exception ofThomson before his deserved promotion to the 2nds after only three matches. The bowling on the whole showed good line and length especially in the 1stterm but1think too much reliance was puton pace while some promising spinners were not given long enough spells to capitalise on their undoubted poten tial. The fielding was generally quite good with the exception ofone ortwoindividuals who were chronically poorfield ers while,as seems to be the perennial problem with most Kearsney cricket teams, far too many catches were put down.Uren blossomed as a wicket-keeper in the 4th term after the premature departure of Hall.
