Chronicle-1993

rated but we nevertheless played disciplined hockey to defeata strong StJohns Johannesburg side before meeting King Edward in the afternoon. The match was played in appalling conditions; we were now down to ten fit players and some dubious umpiring made this a most unhappy af ternoon. We did not play well and the final scoreline of 0-4 was extremely disappointing. Our final match against Zimbabwean St John's saw both sides missing good opportunities. Fortunately St John's missed more than us and a late scrambled goal gained us a win that we perhaps did not deserve. This Festival was well organised and enabled as to build outstanding team spirit that was to be a feature of this side. We suffered a couple more defeats during the season firstly at the hands of Maritzburg College in a very good game that should have been drawn and then against Hilton who on the day played wonderfully well and blunted our strengths. After ourZimbabwean tour which had been so successful, we played old rivals Michaelhouse who up to that stage were unbeaten and in a great match we edged them out 21.Ourfinal outing was against a talented Old Boys side in which the first half was pretty even but we were totally dominant in the second half and ran them ragged. As coach ofthe side this was perhaps one ofthe most re warding ofthe twenty-eight years I have been coaching at the 1st team level. Withoutexception, the boysshowedcommitmentand were thoroughly co-operative. Congratulations are extended to all ourrepresentative play ers but particularly to: J.M.King(S.A.Schools)wholed the school side selflessly and with good tactical insight. He was a source ofinspira tion to all the players and helped in the developmentofthe younger players in particular; A. Tweedie (Natal). He had a marvellous year and has served Kearsney 1st XI hockey well over three seasons. Finally S.Bums who as much as anyone ensured our fine record. He has been totally unselfish, well-motivated and was the sort of player that I was very proud to be associ ated with.He too can look forward to an exciting future in hockey. We werefortunatein having an enthusiastic and loyal group of parents who religiously supported their sons and I ap preciated their involvement. After twenty-eights years ofcoaching 1st XI hockey I felt it was time to step down and I do so in the knowledge that the 1993 season was one ofthe most enjoyable for me in all those years. I wish Mark Mack all the best as he takes over the reins in 1994. I know that he will not be disap pointed with our Kearsney hockey players. Disappointingly a number of boys who had registered for hockey decided for various reasons that they no longer wished to play the sport and accordingly our results were adversely affected. On the positive side it gave the keen and enthusiastic youngsters an opportunity to representthe College and they will surely have benefitted from the ex perience. Most of the games were closely contested and some of these players, because of their experience gained during 1993, will be in the first side in 1994.
