Chronicle-1993

out the season. They developed a good team spirit, and it was a pleasure to coach them. The pack was seldom beaten in the set pieces, although the lineouts were an occasional problem. They usually dominated the loose play. The biggest problem was atcen tre, where we lacked penetration, and the tackling was not up to the required standard. The side was well led, firstly by M.Pearse, and then L.Bento.Both led by example and set very high standards ofcommitment. P.DANIELS Results: V. Pinetown Won 22-5 V. D.H.S. Lost 5-45 V. Pappas,S. Sibiya,D.Takis,A.van Rooyen,T. Wise. Although they only managed to win oneoutofsix matches, our players enjoyed their games and played with determi nation and enthusiasm in spite of the fact that they were outclassed by most of their opponents-especially in the scrum, where there was a great dearth of props and locks at this level. Hunter,R.Lee,D.Parker,S. Sander. For a team that won as little ball as we did these are not bad results. For some reason the forwards never knitted into a unit and, consequently, what they gave away in strength and speed could not be negated. The tight-loose play was weak and Stacey and Crockett(the two smallest forwards)were the only effective "grovellers". On the few occasions where we did obtain good posses sion our backs used it well.Picken was always prominent, and Hunter very penetrative. The best performance was against Hilton, previously un beaten, where we hung in for the full 50 minutes and the forwards maintained a high work rate throughout. All-in-all it was an enjoyable season with commendable commitmentfrom the boys. A.M.GRIFFITHS Results: V. Pinetown Won 17-0 V. DHS Lost 5-10 V. Glenwood Won 29-0 V. Maritzburg College Lost 10-20 V. This was mostly a case offeast orfamine-we either won comfortably or lost equally uncomfortably. After some spiritless displays early on,thefortitude stiffened and some good wins wererecorded particularly againstWestville and Michaelhouse. The forwards struggled as a rule, but the backs showed enterprise and penetration. J. BANTJFS Results: V.Pinetown Won 29-7 V.D.H.S. Lost 5-30 V.Glenwood Won 29-7 V. Without doubt this is one of the most pleasant groups of boys I have had at Kearsney. The'Cteam is never easy to coach owing to the continualchanges and injuriesin teams above. However,we managed to create a very good team spirit which, in turn, led to a successful season. The for wards were a little small and set piece ball was difficult to come by. However, with the ball in possession, the tal ented back line ran in some very good tries. To single out players would be unfair, but Bruce Polkinghome led the side well. They never gave up,and their determination led to their winning the"Old Crocks"trophy for the best sea son in the school-played 10 won 9. Finally, I would like to thank the parents who supported the team throughout the season. Their enthusiasm on the side was much appreciated. P.A.T. RATCLIFFF 85
