Phillips,A.Smal,W.Verbaan. The U13A rugby team had an extremely successful sea son, as can be seen from its admirable record at6 wins,3 losses, and two draws.A feature ofthis team was its team Lost 7-35 Won 14-3 Lost 10-30 Lost 7-31 Lost 0-91 Won 17-12 spirit and determination which saw it through many diffi cult matches. Eitness also played an important role. The unpopularend ofpractice fitness sessions therefore proved to have been worthwhile. Regular practice of basic drills augmented the natural ability ofall the players which made it possible to play a running game ofdirect play, with their vital ball retention skills keeping the ball in our hands. The team was very ably led by Angus Martyn, whose fine example proved to be the necessary inspiration to encour age the rest of the team to reach their full potential. The backs were led by Benji Hector whose reliable, safe play, and remarkable feel for the game, lent a stability and flair to this department. This made for some excellent running and penetrative rugby. Benji, with Warrick Brant as his vice captain, also ably led the team for a short period. A feature of this team was the powerful forward line-up which enabled us to gain and keep control ofthe ball, and to provide a sturdy platform for the backs from which to attack. The frontrow combined bulk, speed and skill, with Warrick Brant proving to be one of the stars of the team. Besides his sturdy scrummaging, he was able to launch many an attack on the opposition, and he proved to be sin gularly difficult to bring down. Matthew Copeland and Jonathan Phillips were also very effective in the scrums, and in the loose. Many a tight situation was saved by an opportune tighthead. The second row ofAlistair Smal and Craig Allison wasalways effective in both scrum and lineout. However, what made the locks especially useful was their ability to act as additional loose forwards. One ofthe rea sons for the team's success was the loose forward trio. Mention has already been made of the ever-present An gus.He was, however, very ably assisted by Michael Nel son and Peter Lamplough.Michael was always in the pro verbial thick of things in both defence and on attack, and he and Angus proved to be a formidable pair of flanks. Peter Lamplough complimented this marauding duo with y m A& r The under 13A team at a braai after their final match 87
