UNDER 15C Captain: P. Hind Regularplayers: R.Atkinson,J. Barthus,D.Bissell,H. Cathcart-Kay, D. Emanuel, S. Frizelle, R. Gregory, T. Hall, S. Lorimer, K. Macaulay, C. Macfarlane, M. MacHutchon, M. Matebese, M. Mothibi, B. Polkinghorne,A.Sawers,H.Young. The season started with a very tough game against the Thomas More U15A side. They were mueh too strong for us and we were soundly beaten. It then took a while for the players to regain their confidence and to adapt to their coach's style of play.As the season progressed so the team's performances improved. The pack was seldom beaten in the set pieces, and there was a pleasing improvement in the loose play through out the course ofthe season. The forwards were able to win alotofgood ball at the lineouts and this enabled the backs to produce some fine backline movements and good straight running. Among the forwards CatheartKay,Bissell and Emanuel were alwaysprominentin most phases of play. In the three-quarters Erizelle, Gregory and Mothibi had several good games. When theforwards and three-quarters combined,as they did on a number ofoccasions, the team produced some fine rugby and a winning result. The team was well led by Hind, always leading by example and setting a high standard ofcommitment. V. Thomas More U15A lost 12-28 V. Westville lost 8-10 V. DHS drew 5-5 V. Storrar, W. van Aardt, R. van Loggerenberg,J. Windsor,E.Yiannakis. Our main problem this season was that of being able to raise a team. With the number of boys playing rugby having declined, wefound ourselves with only seven or eight boys attending practices regularly. To raise a team we had to rely upon the services of hockey players, squash players-in fact anyone who was available! Our thanks to those who volunteered to play to avoid games being cancelled. Although we were not very successful in our matches, the boys played with enjoymentand zeal.Special thanks are due to Steve Lorimer for all he did to inspire com mitment and enthusiasm under adverse circumstances. V. Richards Bay U15B lost 7-54 V. Westville lost 14-30 V. DHS lost 7-58 V. Maritzburg College U15E lost 12-31 V. Glenwood lost 10-19 V. Slater,A.Smal,C.Alison, P.Sampson,A.Martyn,M.Nelson,L.Bush,J.Lemmer. The team played well enough to share the Old Crocks trophy for the most successful side and the boys can be well pleased with the season. This is a talented group but a plethora of injuries disrupted us and only seven boys played in all the games.I am sure we would have been unbeaten but for injuries to key players. Despite their success, I feel that somehow I was unable to get the team to play to its full potential on quite afew occa sions. The work rate of the tight five often slackened and the energetic loose trio had to cover for them. The scrummaging was really good and we obtained a rea sonable supply of loose and lineout ball. The backline suffered most from injury, but stuck to its job gamely. After some persuasion the boys were prepared to play in unfamiliar positions and, as a consequence, many uncovered latent attributes and grew in confidence and skill. V.Gelofte(A) won 26-0 V.Westville(A) won 55-0 V.DHS(H) won 26-5 V.College(A) lost 0-21 V.Pinetown(H) won 15-5 V. It took only afew weeks for the boys to settle into their positions and understand their particular role in the team. Once the team realized that the game could only be won by forcing the ball, an element of urgency developed in the team's play. Every player improved his individual skills through the season but it was particularly pleasing to see the for wards developfrom strength to strength in both the ruck and the maul, improving in leaps and bounds in their ability to gain or retain possession ofthe loose ball. Games that come to mind were the wonderful victory over Westville and the nail-biting match against Hilton, which ended in our favour in the dying moments. On all the occasions the boys'discipline wasofthe high est standard both on and off the field-so too was their sportsmanship and enthusiasm. It was always a pleas ure working with such fine young men. V. Kokstad 3rds V. Ixopo 14A V. Westville V.DHS V. College 14C V. Pinetown V. Northwood V. Glenwood V. Alex 14A V. Hilton V.
