A keen and enthusiastic group of players who were a pleasure to coach; once again size, particularly in the forwards, proved a problem in set pieces but the boys never gave up and when in possession ran with determi nation. This resulted in an excellent season, playing 11 and winning 8.G.Neilson led the side well and improved with every game he played. Results: V. Richards Bay V. Gelofte U14B V. Westville V. DHS V. A successful season; the boys played with great enthu siasm.Several boys who began the season in the Ds were playing in the Bs by the end of the season. The boys were inspired by the fact that Dean Eranz, the star 1st XV fly half, was once an U14D player. Ultimately, the team ended up winning more gamesthan they lost. The lingering impression is that these lads re ally enjoyed playing the game. Results: V. Littlejohn, W.McDonald, S. O'Callaghan, L. Preston, W.Shire, K.Tyack,M.Williams. The team had a difficult season as the boys were gener ally smaller and less experienced than their opponents. In spite of this, they acquitted themselves well, usually giving of their best. It was often when the 'chips were down', with the score mounting up against them, that they showed true grit and determination. The team was ably led by Chad Message whose fine example often inspired his team mates to play above themselves. He is a very good and determined loose for ward who should develop into an excellent player. Cameron Wells at fly-half was the Vice Captain whose educated boot and skilful running often had the opposi tion turning and playing backwards. However, with the exception of Geoffrey Brown on the wing, he often lacked the support of his backs in attack as there was an unfortunate lack ofspeed in that department. However, having said that, the backs made up for their lack of pace through determined defence, and hard, di rect running when the opportunities presented them selves.Brown wasexcellent on both attack and defence. The forwards developed into a useful unit, and as their rucking and mauling skills improved, they were often able to rob their bulkier opponents ofvaluable ball. Their scrumming was also effective attimes, and lineout work was adequate, with Chad Message winning most ofthe ball in this department. He was ably assisted by Ross Littlejohn who was undoubtedly the most improved player of the season, and Mark Williams's hard play in the tight and loose was rewarded with many a try. A highlight of the season was our trip to Johannesburg to play in the Parktown Boys' High U14 tournament. We were able to takefour boysfrom the Kearsney U14A team who fell into the January U14 age group, and we had a most successful tour, winning five of the eight games. Our mostimpressive game was against StStithians who, although bigger and stronger, were unable to match our skill and determination. This tour was probably the turn ing point in the season as from this time the team be came a far more cohesive unit. All in all, I think it was a tough introduction to high school rugby, butI think this season will stand the boys in good stead for a successful future in rugby. Results: V. Highbury Ists won 26-0 V.
