Swimming Captain: Warwick Tindall The standard ofswimming at school level continues to improve and for Kearsney to maintain its position in the top 4 schools in Natal has become a real battle. With our re-entry to world swimming, many ofthe really top junior swimmers are going to schools in Durban so as to be near their club coaches. To compete we need to provide facilities which are better than our opposing schools i.e. an all year training facility. Mythanksto the Parents Societyfor taking up this strug gle and providing the first step towards heating the pool. The pool solar covers enable us to use the pool much earlier in the waterpolo season and those results are re flected elsewhere. To maintain our strength in aquatics, we have built the 'B'team into a formidable force and in the BoysB gala we vied for 1st place throughout the meeting and in the end managed an excellent and close 3rd place. TheA gala was dominated this year by D.H.S.thanks to their crop ofjunior swimmers and we swam very well on the night to end up in 4th place, behind Northwood hut beating both Westville and Pinetown. In view ofthe changing face ofschools thePmh.&Dis tricts gala was not held as only Maritzhurg College and Hilton are still boys-only schools. We hope to have a Top 10school gala in 1995,which should be very excit ing indeed. The interhouse gala was its usual exciting affair with another5Individual and 2relay records being broken.I think, however, that the upward surge of the last 4-5 seasons is now peaking and the records are so good that we will not have so many new records in 1995! Possi bly this is a challenge! The Interhouse results were as follows: Under 13H:Feamhead Cup T.Browne Under 14H: van Gorkom Cup G.Jollands Under 15H: Matterson Cup J. Hunter Under 16H:Spradbrow Cup M.Jollands 2Lengths Butterfly Open: Chris Lee Cup G.Hunter Backstroke Open: Phillip Hind Cup G.Hunter Breaststroke Open:John Bester Cup R.Paterson 200 yds Freestyle Open: Nightingale Cup M.Jollands too yds Freestyle Open:Sandy Marr Cup G.Hunter Individual Medley Open:Dowdall Trophy M.Jollands Winner ofthe Open Age Group: Robertson Cup G.Hunter Best Performance-Runner-Up: Spargo Cup G.Hunter Best Performance of the Day:Ian Tirrell Shield M.Jollands Open Relay Team: Bryan Cup Gillingham Interhouse Competition: L.F. Forsyth Rose Bowl Finningley 400 yds Freestyle Open:Parker Cup M.Jollands 20 Man Relay: Charmian Silcock Trophy: Gillingham The final results were Finningley 202,Gillingham 179 and Pembroke 97. This shows a marked improvement by Gillingham and the '95 gala should be very closely contested. The annual Triangular gala was also changed this year by our inviting the4independent girls schoolsfrom the Midlands to compete. This changed the entire atmos phere of a gala that had become rather staid to a new exciting event with much interaction between the boys and girls and also the staff! 1994 was an excellent year and in this regard I must thank the other coaches most sincerely; Barry Mullane and Mark Mack for their excellent work with the 'B' team.We will miss Barry's fierce competitive spirit, but wish him lots of good swimming'Down Under'. Also thanks to the coaches who assisted with the Ateam: Dave Knowles and Andrew Bromley-Gans. My thanks to the team and captain: You were dedicated and hard-working and it was a pleasure to coach you. C VANLOGGERENBERG Kearsney Chronicle 1994 105
