They were a most enthusiastic and cheerful group who always gave oftheir best. The team was well lead by Matthew Cocks whose field placings and bowling changes often pro duced favourable results. Ascan be seen from some ofthe remarkably high scores, the standard ofthe batting was very high, especially for a C team. At times the bowling was reasonably good, but at other times faulty line and length made things a little too easy for opposition batsmen. However, towards the end of the season the bowling was looking much better. Judging by the standard ofthe cricket at aCteam level, the future ofcricket at Kearsney looks very healthy in deed, and my thanks go to each member ofthe team for making this such an enjoyable year. J. Groom(Capt.),C.Wells,G.Brown, B.Swanepoel,C.Ashmore,M.Lane,M.Cole-Edwards, K.Tyack,G.Jackson,C. Message,M.Linz,S. Strang. The success of this team was largely due to its batting efficiency: in thirteen matches it was bowled out only once. Groom had a very good year indeed - he shows much promise and with minortechnical adjustments has a really brightfuture. Wells also scored significantly but tended to make repeated errors which will be costly as opponents become less forgiving. The improvement of the less able players was most gratifying-they had few opportunities and eagerly grasped the ones which came their way. Ashmore needs special mention in this re gard. The bowling was never devastating and only on a few occasions did more than one bowler hold length and line consistently. Cole-Edwards is penetrative and if he has the tenacity and optimism required to be a leg-spinner there is no telling what heights he could reach. Wells also contributed well with his off-spinners but as with the other disciplines he suffers inexplicable and serious lapses in concentration. Unfortunately this was a weak fielding side and this de partmentseemed to go backwards as the year progressed. Confidence was lacking and when things got difficult concentration and determination lapsed.Eane hassome ability as a wicket-keeper and ifhe puts in the necessary labour at practice and strengthens a little he could be good. Groom's captaincy needed more autocracy and less gentleness but I suspect the post is not much to his liking. Results: Best Batting: J. Groom C.
