There was considerable disruption to the fixtures because of the elections and several games were not played at all. The other area of concern was the dwindling number of players that participated in the open age group. There were several reasons for this, some unavoidable, but we hope to be back on track in 1995. The encouraging aspect was the commitment that was shown by most of the players despite the relatively low profile of hockey at Kearsney. The 1st XI has had very much a team-building year withmany young and inex periencedplayers andMr Mack is to be commended on a job well done. The junior teams and the new Under 16 age group generally enjoyed a successful season. DJ. CATO 1ST TEAM The season was abit erratic this year. We achieved some very good results as well as some weak ones. A high light of the season was the match against Maritzburg College; this was a game inwhich the entire teamplayed as a unit, defending for almost the full first half withno goal being scored. The final result was a 3-0 loss but a win in terms of team play. It was commitment like this that made coaching this team a pleasure. The arrival of Mr Steve McNeill and his input was of great benefit. His experience and knowledge had a motivating effect on the entire team. Three players represented the Natal UI8 team at the Interprovincial held at Randburg this year. They were: Simon McKeown, Errol Larson and John Caulfield. These players also provided the team's backbone, lead ing by example and showing high levels of skill and ability. As the last line of defence,Paul Smithoftenpulled off some spectacular saves taking the pressure off the team. Simon Hipkin was a solid and reliable defender. Richard (Peanut) Brown was a committed team mem ber who always gave of his best and was an essential member of the defence. Scott Summers showed flair and insight on attack and could also be relied upon in de fence. Shaun Rutherford was a useful inside forward whose speed was an asset in this position. Scott Picken was a goodexample of aplayer who showed 100% com mitment, guts anddeterminationinevery match inwhich heplayed! DaleParker, anU16player, was a good striker and forward who showed great potential and develop ment during the season. WilliamLee was a winger who mademany strong drives down the wingproviding scor ingopportunities onmany occasions.David Takis,Pierre du Plessis, Bossie Hulett and Lee Moseley also played in the team this year. 1995 shouldbe a good year with some promising young players coming up, some of whom played one or two games at the end of season: Hedley Young, LungaBaal, Bruce Polkinghome andRyan Baxter.
