Chronicle-1994

The Under 16age group wasintroducedforthe firsttime this year so as to fall in line with the national selection criteria. It has not heen an unqualified success but I do believe that the hoys in this age group gained tremen dously in experience and tactical awareness and many ofthe boys will go on to represent the 1st XI next year. We unfortunately lost Dale Parker to the1st XI early on in the season hut the players rallied and by the end of the season were playing a controlled and mature brand of hockey. Skill levels improved dramatically hut I would remind all players that in order to make the grade in this sport they need to practise those skills in their spare time to reach the level that is required at provincial level. I wish all the players the best of fortune in 1995 and thank them for a rewarding hockey season. Results: 16A 16B V. Kloof Won 2-0 Draw 0-0 V. Glenwood Won 4-0 Draw 1-1 V. Hillcrest Lost 0-1 V. KING pursue in their remaining years at Kearsney. It would be possible to play more than one sport but because ofthe time demands ofeach and the increasing degree ofspe ciality required to reach the heights expected by coaches and others, it would be advisable to concentrate on one sport. I certainly hope that the choice of most will be hockey. D.CATO UNDER 14B Regular players: P. Lamplough (capt.), B. Cole, E. Reavy, N. Wallace, R. James, M. du Plessis, W. Halberstadt,C.Alison,N.Corbett,G.Tilley,T. Molloy, M.Cocks. This was the only hockey team which was unbeaten in 1994.The team, led very capably by Peter Lamplough, is to becommended on their approach to the game. They stuck to the basics and played all their matches with the utmost determination to win. The importance of the B team in the age group was again very obvious this year. Many of the players reached new heights in their own personal game in their quest for a place in the A team. Several were fortunate enough to gain promotion and acquitted themselves very well indeed. It was a great season and the players can be very proud of their performance, attitude and sportsmanship. D.CATO UNDER 14A Regularplayers:B.Hector(Capt.),M.Cocks,D.Clark, D. Bowen, M. Ric-Hansen, R. Duys, R. Grobler, R. Wightman, J. Cole-Edwardes, S. Paola, M. Copeland, B.Anderson,T. Molloy. The nucleus of the 1993 Under 13A team plus a few imports from Clifton and Highbury moulded together into a very successful team, losing only one match to our old rivals, Maritzburg College. It was pleasing to see the commitment of the players despite the fact that many ofthem were also involved in rugby or tennis. The encouraging fact from a coach's point of view was that most of the players took it upon themselves to practise their basic skills in their own time. As a result, the level ofindividual skill ofthe team was very high, hut there were times when the team work as pect of the game was forgotten. This area is difficult to coach, especially with the limited time availablefor prac tices. Many ofthe players who excel in other sports as well as hockey will befaced with a decision as to which sportto UNDER 14C Regularplayers: R Keelan(Capt.),A.Wroe,J. Baxter, G.Newcomhe-Bond,R.Erost,G.Mclntosh,G.Stobie, A.Blore, J. Waters,A.Buthelezi,S.Pilbeam. These C team players are the often forgotten aboutcon tributors to the success ofthe age group as a whole. They are the boys who have faithfully attended practice for a whole term with only one or two matches to look for ward to. I would personally like to thank and congratu late these boysfor whatthey did for Under 14 hockey in 1994 14C drew 1-1 . D.
