Rugby It is once again a pleasure to report that rugby is in a healthy state at Kearsney. We had a small matric group this year and we were worried aboutouropen age groups. They have come through well, with the 1sts to the 4ths acquitting themselves admirably. The strength ofour rugby has been in the U15 and U14 age groups and this bodes wellfor the future. It has taken a great deal ofeffortfrom all involved to ensure that our rugby remains strong. The boys have put a lot ofeffort into their rugby at both practices and in matches. The coaching staffhave been dedicated and enthusiastic and their efforts have been commendable. Then there has been John Taylor and all from Supervi sion who have had our teas, lunches, oranges and juice for matches and after match snacks at the ready. The staff wives have served teas with their usual radiant smiles and the fields have been in exceptionally good condition. We now have the irrigation system working well and thanks must go to Dr Shuker and Mr Polkinghomefor sorting it out,and to Jay Govender and the grounds stafffor keeping the sprays going. All in all it has been a good season with the Old Crocks trophy for the most successful side being shared by the U15As and U14As,both with 8 wins out of 10. The Robin Blamey trophy for the house providing the most rugby players went to Gillingham. FIRST XV The stats read that we played 24 school games, winning 14,losing 10, scoring 591 points and having 339 points scored against us. A fairly good season one might say, with ateam that had veryfew players backfrom last year. The'94side had their moments-in victory and defeat.4 Games were lost in the dying minutes - Queens, Glenwood,StAndrewsand Falcon. And,like the'94Boks in New Zealand,it was often a case ofmissed opportuni ties.In victory they had afew which will be remembered many a time in years to come.Neverin the history ofthe College has a team scored 91 points in a match, and for the second yearrunning they"came right"at the The Sta dium King's Park, and once again put 40 points on the board against one of our traditional rivals. Against Michaelhouse at Balgowan, we repeated the victory of two years before, robbing them of victory in the dying moments, and leaving the home supporters speechless. All in all it will be a season to be remembered. It started in the first week of the April holidays with a game against Hillcrest in which we stumbled to a win. We then undertook a tour to the Natal South Coast and comfortably beat Scottburgh and Suid-Natal.It wasthen, on to the annual Kokstad Festival, where Queens man aged to inflict our first defeat by way of7 penalties and a drop kick to our 2goals and 2penalties. We returned home to host Northclifffrom Johannesburg in our first 94 Kearsney Chronicle 1994
