Chronicle-1994

offthe mark he has the potential to go far in rugby and I hope he sticks to the game. JUSTIN RAUTENBACH;Highways XV,Honours His fan club has grown with every one ofthe 27 tries he has scored. Rightfrom the outset during the 1st XV tri als he has shown that he can beat a tackle. This ability has developed steadily throughout the season and, whereas at the beginning, he would use his pace or strength to go through,he now has the ability to wrongfoot his opponent and beat him in that classic style that great wings have. His ball handling skills haveimproved vastly from last year and with a little more development in this area he has the potential to reach the top next year. GRANT VERBAAN Mr Reliable-he has been rock hard in defence and has run hard and straight on attack. However, injuries have curtailed whatcould have been a really good season but when he has played, the team has been able to rely on him to make a hard first time tackle,go in directly with the ball and know we will retain possession ofthe ball.I hope next year he will be able to realize his full poten tial, and have an injury free season. SEAN WESTERHOFF:Highways XV As one of the young members of the side, he has not been shy to take on the opposition aggressively. In both defence and attack, he has shown that he is capable of more than holding his own and has made as many tell ing tackles as he has cut through. If he continues to de velop the way he has done this year, he should have an exciting 1995. LIONEL McDOUGALL:Highways XV,Colours Once he gotto understand the importance and effective ness of being disciplined his natural ability blossomed. He is an exciting player to watch and that is not only because ofhis unpredictability. His defence is solid, his reading of the game good, with his attack very effec tive, especially when cutting back and often through defence lines. His try against College was an excellent example of this. JOHN ANTONI Although he has had somewhatofan injury plagued sea son he has shown that he has a lot of heart. He is safe underthe high ball, has gota big right bootand when he comes into the line, he has the ability to open up the defence with consummate ease. To improve his play he would need to work on developing a left footed kick and on breeching defences he should aim at linking up and getting a pass away to a team mate. STUART FOSTER One ofthe players who developed beyond expectation. His ball handling skills have been good, with his ability to read the game situation quickly and react effectively being his strongest point. He has played more often than not at centre but is a more than useful fly half or full back. NEILANDERSON He has been a reliable memberofthe party. His defence is his strongest point and he showed this with great ef fect at the Private Schools Festival when he pressurized the opposing back line into submission. He can also play just about anywhere in the back line, and this has been an advantage to the team, especially when touring. DIMITRI YIANNAKIS After a lot of pre-season gym work he cemented his position as tight head prop and did a good job. He has unfortunately not been able to complete the season, but has played the required number of games for the 1st XV. Results: V. Hillcrest won 25-0 V. Scottburgh won 62-5 V. Suid Natal won 42-5 V. Thackwell,A.Thorne,M.Tyler,G.Uren. A most disappointing season, commencing with com prehensive wins against schools 1stXVsbutending with resounding losses againstour Midlands rivals.Theteam lacksthe discipline or genuine pace to defend efficiently. The boys did run well with the ball, particularly from well won line-out ball.Perhaps those retuming will have been persuaded that DISCIPLINE,both on and off the field, will enable sides to play competitive, winning rugby.
