Chronicle-1995

FUNCTIONS The Club has not hosted as many events as last year due to other commitments, but those held were highly successful. Briefly the following functions were held; a) The 49th AGM took place on 3 October 1994 at the "One and All" clubhouse and after the lively business session, we enjoyed a well organised braai together with wives and partners. (b) The 8th Annual GolfDay was held on 21 October 1994 and was again well supported by the Johannesburg business sector and Old Boys. (c) Our traditional year-end Cheese & Wine party, at which the branch entertains the Old Boys and their partners, was held on tne first Monday of December. (d) We defended the Bester Boot against the regular Saints Old Boys cricket XI and were beaten convincingly, due to a lack of good bowlers and dropped catches. (e) AnnualPub Nights require a lot of pre-phoning to drag the Old Boys and their friends away from their safe, warm winter homes as we soon learnt from the poor turnout for this event. Needless to say those who ventured out in the rain enjoyed a good meal and music by Baden Hall. (f) One team entered into the Annual DHS Golf Day with average results unusual for us but allowing another team a chance to take the honours. (g) We were very privileged to have Pip Townshend as Guest of Honour and Speaker at the Annual Dinner, held at the Wanderers Golf Club, on 13 July 1995. Dave Polkinghome replied to the speech and acted as MC.Judging by the excellent tumout,"Pip" was obviously the right drawcard and we thank him sincerely for travelling up from Grahamstown to be with us and wish him well in his retirement years. OTHER ACTIVITIES We entertained the Kearsney 1st XV Rugby Team during their successful participation in the Easter Rugby Festival. We again entered two teams into the annual Frames Golf Trophy held at Royal Johannesburg GC.Parents and prospective new parents were hosted by the School for cocktails and drinks and a very professional presentation by the marketing team and Owen Roberts. It was a real eye-opener to observe the changes that have taken place at the School and 1 felt proud to be part it all. Action Cricket remains popular amongst certain Old Boys but we had to settle for 3rd place again in this year's Annnual Natal Private Schools Old Boys Triangular F FUTUREEVENTS We look forward to a well attended branch AGM on 2 October 1995, where we again open our doors to wives and partners after the business session . On Friday 15 September we host the Annual Golf Day at Parkview GC, where we hope to boost our contribution to the Benevolent Fund from kind supporters and sponsors. The Annual Cheese&Wine Party on4December 1995 will be held at the "One and All", St Stithians College and all Old Boy,wives and partners are welcome, Inconcluding 1 would like to take this opportunity to thank fellow committee members of the Transvaal branch for their enthusiasm and invaluable contribution. With the continued support of our regular members and the main branch Executive efforts in maintaining an active mailing list, we expect to establish and keep contact with more Old Boys in the future. Keith Bollard Chairman UNITED KINGDOM BRANCH REPORT The London Branch had an active year of friendship and fellowship, and there were a number of very good meetings on the second Friday of each month, at the Rugby Club ofLondon,in Hallam Street,London W1. We had the pleasure of entertaining Dick Best and his son Hubert, and those of us who went through Junior House in the old days, will remember with great affection the kindness of the Best family, and baby sitting young Hubert. We also had tremendous pleasure in entertaining Gary and Lyn Collingwood, who provided us with an up to date report on what was happening and the long-term plans for the school At the AGM on Friday 7 July, Sir Ian McLeod was elected Chairman, replacing Alan Kinsey who had served for three years, and Roger Simpson was elected Secretary. Although the U.K. Branch may be very limited in numbers, we had a good tumout at our Annual Dinner, which was held at the Rugby Club. We look forward to meeting visiting old boys when they next come to London. ZULULAND BRANCH REPORT Mr Chairman, it gives me great pleasure to report on the activities of the Zululand Branch for this past year. We pay tribute to three of our very well known Old Boys who passed away recently, Norman Theunissen, Denzil Clark and Leo Hagemann.
