1995Post Matric Report Accounting Report 1995 saw the successful introduction of the Damelin "Marketing and Business Management Diploma", covering the following subjects; business com munications, statistics, marketing, economics, management, financial accounting and business law. Five post matrics registered and three were successful. Diplomas were awarded to Garrick Morris and Gavin Uren who passed 5 subjects at over 50% and Niel Anderson wbo passed 7 subjects. The full value of this course is reflected in the fact that it prepares the students for the examinations set by the intemationally regarded I.M.M.and C.I.S.institutes.Eight exams were passed at I.M.M.and four at C.I.S. level. Six post matrics registered through UNISA in subject packages ranging from maths, physics, biology to commercial subjects. The examination results were very disappointing with 12 passed and 15 failed. The single most significant factor was that all students had decided on a change of career or academic path, prior to the examinations. To illustrate: potential civil engineers decided to study law and commerce in 1996. Agricultural economists changed to rugby and aviation and another to motor mechanics. Reflecting on these results,I think the post matric year must be seen in the context of a bridging or a transition year. If there are failures or hard lessons learnt, this plays an intrinsic part in the growth and maturing of students. The extra-curriculum programme provided a whole-life experience for every student. An ocean sailing course bonded the group and gave them an insight into the importance ofevery member ofa team playing his part. The MAST course taught them a little about public speaking, time management and in addition made them aware of the AIDS problem. A Street Law series of lectures gave them food for thought about human and constitutional rights with a mock trial giving them a taste of the proceedings in a court-room. The Grahamstown Festival trip provided them with an unforgettable cultural experience. From a sporting prospective, a number of post matrics were successful. Justin Rautenbach(Natal Schools)and Gavin Uren (Natal Schools Reserve and Natal Development) were awarded their Rugby Honours. Sporting colours were awarded to Simon McKeown (cricket). Grant Verbaan (rugby) and Quintin Seago (waterpolo). The following represented the College's first teams: Garrick Morris (rugby), Charles Lucey (rugby and cricket), Ross McKenzie (cricket) and Quintin Seago(rugby). The 1995 post matric group was a fine group of young men. Their contribution to the college was significant and all of them are to be congratulated on their commitment to the college. On behalf of Kearsney College, I would like to thank them and wish them all good fortune in their future careers Fred Cocks For the first time in history an Accounting Department appeared on the Kearsney timetable. Mr Steyn and I arrived in January to create and set up this department. By December we had become recognised and given our due place amongst all the other subjects. A large emphasis is placed on the life skills aspect of our subject so that pupils leave school with some knowledge of the financial world. We began the year with one form 5 class, two form 4 classes and all the form 3's. It is indeed heartening to see how our numbers have grown for next year. Despite being only in form 5 Ryan Atkinson and Damian Hourquebie were placed in the top 100 nationally in the Accounting Olympiad.Hopefully with their greater knowledge next year we can achieve even greater heights. The Business Game team also had to compete against matrics, but still reached the Natal quarter-finals. My sincerest thanks to Mr Steyn for all his support and we look forward to 1996 when we will see the first lot of Accounting matrics go through Kearsney. Sudding afskeid neem.
