Chronicle-1995

Junior Art Club The Junior Art Club was very well supported this year. Each term a group ofenthusiastic boys tackled projects that interested them. They teamed to make containers in clay using various methods. Although the outcome was not always as professional as they had hoped,a lot was learned and the joy of actually making something was experienced. For those who preferred the two dimensional disciplines, there was drawing, pastels and painting. A number of boys opted for designing a logo for a T-shirt. Some of the designs were quite complex and the boys gained experience in making stencils for this that were both interesting and practical. The emphasis during the year has been on enjoying the subject and having the opportunity to create works of art that the boys are particularly interested in. Senior Art Club The Senior Art Club continues to be a well-supported and useful adjunct to the Art Department and caters not only for boys who are doing art as a subject, but for those who enjoy art as a leisure activity. Some successful workshops were held this year, specifically a raku firing workshop which produced some very good results and also a sculpture and a decorating workshop. I hope the enthusiasm will continue into next year with boys doing more community work. Some had the chance to help this past year and the results were good and well received by the people we were helping. Thank you. C.Tullidge Climbing Club Bridge Club The Bridge Club ran every fortnight and was well attended by some 20 players. The large majority were beginners and the year was spent consolidating basic bidding and playing procedures. It is hoped that during 1996 several games against the staff will be arranged. F. Cocks Chess Club Despite some administrative difficulties because of a very substantial increase in numbers, the Chess Club had a very successful year. The inter-house results were as follows: 1st Gillingham 14 points 2nd Finningley 8,5 points 3rd Pembroke 7,5 points A full report on the Chess Club's inter-school activities appears in the sport section of the Chronicle. C.Tullidge We have had many skilled and enthusiastic members in the Climbing Club this year. All members have had a great time and have overcome a few fears, and leamed the in's and out's of this truly exhilarating club. Towards the end ofthe 4th term, we obtained the funds to purchase some new equipment, which was greatly appreciated by all involved with the club. 1 would like to give my sincere thanks to Mr Graves, the master in charge of the club, for a really successful year, and 1 am sure that next year will be just as good, if not better. Scott Hastie (Chairman) ... •ShovT iJ: i - , ,»• - > ■ ' - Current Affairs In order for this club to look at affairs that are "current", it met every week instead of every fortnight. Over 30 boys discussed the issues of the day like Bosnia, French nuclear testing, the crisis in KwaZulu Natal, the capital punishment issue, etc - and of course the Rugby World Cup. The quality of input from the boys improved steadily throughout the year. M.6/sse/l Cycling Club The number ofboys who were actively involved in this club was a little disappointing. One ofthe main reasons for this is the logistical difficulty of getting a bike to Kearsney and storing it safely. Another contributing factor, and of greater concern for me, is the busy and dangerous Old Main Road which is difficult to avoid when selecting a route from Kearsney. 64 Kearsney Chronicle 1995
