Tostee Front: A.Johnson Athletics Our school athletics team competed with considerable success in two meetings recently. On Saturday 16 September we hosted a Quadrangular meeting with Northwood,Pinetown and Westville being our guests. Pinetown dominated the meeting with Westville squeezing us into third position The final results of this relay meeting were: Pinetown 183 points, Westville 149 points, Kearsney 147 points and Northwood 120 points. Our athletes certainly performed admirably and there were some outstanding individual efforts. In the under 14 age group,Chad Message,Ico Claasen, Frans van Tonder and Francois Viljoen excelled. It is very encouraging to see our depth at this level. In the under 15 age group, Luke Bush was invincible and getting good support from Duncan Bowen and Gary Griffin. In the under 16 age group,Ryan Price was our top athlete and has a good future in the sport. Angus Martyn and Jacques Marnewick show considerable promise. Grant Henderson (Athletics Captain) threw a mighty 64 metres in the U17 javelin and is the top athlete in Natal in that discipline. Andrew Johnson was outstanding in the middle distance runs. By comparison our open athletics were a little weak but there were creditable performances by Sean Westerhoff and Cliff Chandler. This good all round performance set us up effectively for the Triangular meeting with Michaelhouse and Hilton on Monday 18th again hosted by Kearsney. We dominated the meeting, winning comfortably with the final result being Kearsney 140 points, Hilton 102 points and Michaelhouse 57 points. Once again our middle distance runners were superb with the highlight being a 1 23 placing in the U14 800 metres. Our sprinting is still a cause for concern but our overall strength and depth ensured success. Chad Message broke the U14 high jump record at 1.72m and again performed superbly. We won 28 ofthe 50events and such is the strength ofourjuniors that we can look forward to further success in the years to come. It has been a short but highly satisfying athletics season and it is to be hoped that 1996 will be even better. It is certainly the intention of the staff to ensure this. P.G.
