This must be the fullest programme ever undertaken by a Kearsney XI - in all 39 marches were started out ofa programme of 41. We attended 3 festivals in South Africa, a DayNight Knockout Competition was entered, an extensive tout of England was undertaken and out normal programme ofSaturday matches was fulfilled As one might expect this long toad had its ups and downs and its long flat stretches - the nadir was out ignominious crashing to 46 all out against Westville / and the zenith was out performance to win by 159 tuns against St. Albans in the Michaelmas I Festival. Noplayerin this side can blame lack of opportunityfor his failure to succeed. y y Played 39- Won 17, lost 14, drawn 4,abandoned 4 is a respectable, if not eye-catching, achievement. On close inspection, however,a number ofthe losses were close and could have gone either way, but in my opinion, we pulled only one game out ofthe fire and had one other close finish in outfavour. In brutal honesty we did not perform well against strong opposition and failed on all occasions (except the two mentioned above)when the heat ofa close finish was on. In the batting department openers Lewis and Madsen ruled supreme, both scoring over 1000 tuns, but no other significant contributions were made, which explains why we so often either annihilated the opposition or lost. Lewis was concentration and doggedness personified - the rock upon which all out significant achievements were based. Madsen, after an indifferent first term - 251 tuns in 16 innings - blossomed into one ofthe finest players I have seen at this College - 800 tuns in 16 innings. His 121 against St. Albans was a silken and surgical dissection ofa bowling attack. Undoubtedly out bowling - six competent performers - was out strength. Only on three occasions can I remember us being without an answer. The three seamets.Booth,Simpson and Cameron, all performed well, although sometimes erratically, and Simpson, with his late away-swing was able to knock over the best players. The three offspinnets,Perkins, Madsen and Lewis, all slightly different, strangled many a team in limited overs matches. Fortunately few injuries were suffered. In the field Canny was the star performer and he would bring a substantial credit balance in with him when he came to bat. We had several fine slip catchers and on the whole we were sound in the fielding department although too often, in those tight matches mentioned earlier, we seemed unable to lift ourselves the few notches that would have swung the match out way. Woodroffe's captaincy was solid - he has a nice idea of basic field settings and a good feel for bowling changes. His exemplary off the field performance was enhanced by a quiet, unobtrusive demeanour on the field. He took this job very seriously and no one can fault his desire for his team to do well. Possibly he should have been able to extract mote from his charges in difficult situations. »MGRIFFITHS BESTBATTING INN N.O. 50 100 BEST TOTAL AV.
