After a promising starr to the season at the Ascension Festival hosted by Pretoria Boys, we were rapidly broughr down to earth by a severe dmbbing by Maritzburg College. This was a key point in the season, where we had ro have a good look at ourselves and decide "what now". The important thing was to turn rhe defeat into something positive and to look ahead,to improve in the remaining games ofthe season. By and large we succeeded bur srill failed to beat our stronger opponenrs such as Glenwood,DHS,Hilton and Michaelhouse. Despite playing good hockey in patches we never really took our opporrunities ro score. This is a critical part ofthe game which cost us dearly in some ofrhese vital games. The overall inexperience ofplayers in key positions was also a factor in rhe indifferent performances ar rimes. The second halfof the season saw some much better performances,parricularly the three nil defeat ofNorthwood,the win over a very physical Kingston Grammar(UK)and more imporrantly the most creditable performance against Millfield, who must rank as the top schoolboy team in the United Kingdom.
