The results reflect an average season for the team, but there was much from a coach's point ofview to enthuse about. The positive and committed approach shown by all the players both at practices and matches was the foundation on which the season was built. The initial delay with the completion ofthe artificial surface and still then having to play several matches on grass did not help much with the development of the player's individual skills. It also proved detrimental to establishing a pattern of play forthe team as a whole.Despite these factors the players approached their hockey with great enthusiasm and it was a privilege to work with a team that played each game to win but never at the expense of enjoyment. »DCATO RESULTS vs Maritzburg College L 1 -7 vs Hilton W 3-1 vs Glenwood L 0-2 vs Westville W 3-0 vs Pinetown W 3 - I vs DHS D 1 - 1 vs Kloof W 1-0 vs Northwood D 1 - 1 vs St. Charles W 2- 1 vs Pretoria Boys'High L 1 - 6 vs Michaelhouse L 0 1 vs Hilton W 2 - 1 r. We once again attended the pre-season Ascension Festival at Maritzburg College and enjoyed mixed fortunes. We played well in patches but were never really consistent enough in all aspects of the game. At the end ofday one, we had two wins under our belt, but thereafter we battled to come to grips with the opposition and lost the next three. It was patently obvious that a lot of work was required if we were to measure up. A few more defeats followed and a couple ofwelcome wins but it was really in the latter part ofthe season that the side began to show their true potential and lost only one oftheir last nine games. This period included the very fine performances against Michaelhouse and a return match against Hilton. Isuppose it would be tme to say that the improvement coincided with the opening of our own Astro and the fact that we were able to practice effectively for the first time made all the difference. Many of the boys developed particularly well and they should form the backbone ofour 1st XI over the next few years. My sincere thanks are extended to Justin King and Greg Clark for the professional way in which they assisted the boys, both technically and tactically. The boys too deserve praise for the way in which they stuck to the task in hand and the transformation in the skill level has been significant. I urge all our Under 16 players to set themselves high standards and train hard. We now have all the advantages and opportunities that are lacking elsewhere in the region and it is essential that we utilise this to our benefit.
