They were motivated to do well and THEY PLAYED LIKE A TEAM! Against really competent teams they refused to wilt, relying instead on guts and determination to carry them through bad patches. The record speaks for itself. Both our losses came in the first halfofthe season. The basic skills ofrugby were well learned at under 14 level last year and Wehada very successful season owing toan ahtmdanceoftalentand totalcommitmentofsome ofourplayers. just needed some polishing. The forwards always played with confidence. Their line-out work was generally good but their scrummaging skills were lacking at first. Their loose play was always excellent. Some of the smaller forwards often proved that technique and courage outshadowed size. The backs were very good indeed - never lacking in pace. Some wonderful tries were scored as a result ofeach back-line player handling the ball. Our fly-half read the game well and the centres penetrated the oppositions back-line on many an occasion. The wings were superb and very well supported by the gutsy full-back. The loose-forward trio worked well together. The team was enthusiastically captained by both Nic Cronje and Rob Hopwood at various times. Whilst my emphasis was primarily on enjoying the game and taking part with winning as a secondary objective, I was fortunate to bring on board Ryan Hunt as a coach. His enthusiasm was infectious and his determination to win was fantastic. He brought out the best in the team instilling in the players a "never say die" attitude. The boys in this team rose to the occasion often playing teams that out-classed them in every aspect of the game, especially when they played the U15B sides of other schools.
