< Captain: C Buys Coach: J Oosthuiz Report: CQ O »—V The season got off to a mediocre start at ^ the Durban Collegians Rugby Festival HH held during the April holidays. There were, however, many positive signs. The fact that the players had only one practice before the tournament and that they had not played together as a side, made it very difficult against club sides that play together every year. On the other hand, the festival provided the ideal opportunity to identify the strengths and weaknesses ofthe side and for the boys to play together before the start of the school season. Many weak areas were identified during the festival, including the lack of experience and depth in key positions. A very encouraging sign was the passion the boys had for the game and their enthusiasm was evident in the way they played. In the end the players showed that if provided with the necessary structure they could develop into a very competitive side. I was very proud oftheir growth,enthusiasm and commitment. Results ofthe Festival were: vs Anglo Chinese Rugby Club Lost 0-15 vs Amanzimtoti Rugby Club Drew 0-0 vs Bryanston School UK Drew 10-10 vs Westville Rugby Club Lost 10-17 vs Amanzimtoti Rugby Club Won 10-0 The side, however, remained rather unsettled during the first part of the school season as players continued to struggle in certain positions and eventually three forwards ended up moving to the back line. Although the boys played with guts and determination during the first few matches, it was not enough to secure victory against the likes ofCollege, Hilton,Glenwood and Pretoria Boys' High. However, as soon as the new players in key positions found their feet, they started playing good rugby and managed to win the last six games ofthe season. Under the capable leadership of Clark Buys, who lead by example, the side developed into a skilful unit playing entertaining rugby.
