Chronicle-2001

cc REPORT 2001 It is a pleasure to write a report on the events in swimming for 2001. Having taken over from a very efficient Dave Knowles, I was literally plunged into the deep end, participating in 11 A team galas in 7 weeks, 5 of which were home fixtures. We had a total ofjust over 120 b o y s participating from the A to the C team level. The seniors led by example, particularly Andrew Goodenough, who captained the side. Not only did he display his incredible talent both at galas and during training, but he was the epitome ofdedication in terms ofeffort in the pool and leadership from the front. The seniors led by example, particularly Andrew Goodenough, who captained the side. INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING The depth ofour swimming was displayed when we came up against our arch rivals, Hilton and Michaelhouse in our first two galas. The first gala of the season was hosted by Michaelhouse where we were placed first, narrowly beating Maritzburg College. At Hilton we won again, this time beating Westville by 4 points. At the Westville night gala, we were struck by a number ofswimmers being sick. This together with a very strong DHS and Grey Bloem side, pushed us into 4th place, 6 points behind Westville. It was to be our wake up call. We then hosted two home galas, both ofwhich were aimed to keep us in the swim against Westville and Hilton as well as Michaelhouse. This tactic proved correct as we entered the Durban and Districts A League gala held at Kings Park. Both our A and B team were entered here. Thefinalpointsposition were asfollows: DHS - A team 283 Kearsney - A team 211 Westville 165 Northwood 154 Pinetown 145 Glenwood 132 Kloof 121 DHS - B team 68 Kearsney - B team 52 Congratulations must also go to a very strong Under 19 side that concluded a five year winning streak in the 4 x 50 m Breaststroke Relay. INTERHOUSE SWIMMING The Interhouse Gala was held on the Monday after half term and this year it was dominated by Pembroke. The guest of honour was Mrs. van den Aardweg, who presented the trophies. A total of 10 new records were set. Brent Taylor was awarded the Victor Laudorum, breaking the 100 m Freestyle record in the process. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Pembroke Sheffield Gillingham Finningly 398 359 318 283 5\F/MM/NG AWARDS: HONOURS:(re-award)Andrew Goodenough COLOURS: Brent Taylor Byron Briscoe Cameron Macleod Chris Hamman Fred Hart Ian Bester Rowan van Tonder »G COLLINS 133
