The annual Kearsney Festival, during which Kearsney hosts invited teams from around rhe country, provided a weekend of competitive tennis that was appreciated by participants and spectators alike. St Stithians fought off Paul Roos in an exciting final, with Kearsney's young, and largely untried, team finishing fourth. RESULTS: Beat Grey High Beat Northcliffe Lost to St Stithians Lost to Cradock High 8 matches to 1 7 matches to 2 4 matches to 5 8 matches to 4. In addition to the tennis calendar this year was the Pretoria Boys High Centenary Tennis Festival, which was held over the Easter weekend and which Kearsney won. As always,this was most enjoyable and competitive - both on and off the courts. Kearsney ended up a respectable 5th in a strong field. Beat DHS Lost to Waterkloof Lost to Cradock 9 matches to 0 8 matches to 1 6 matches to 3. Certain members of the first team achieved distinction outside the school; Struan Alexander,Michael Krog, and Michael Hobson represented KZN at Ul4 level. Cuan Farquharson and Sean Coetzee represented KZN at Ul6 level. Christian Coetzee represented South Africa Ul4 at the All Africa Championships as well as ar various ITF Ul4 tournaments played in Europe. On the whole, 2001 has been a year of development and consolidation, with several new and promising players making their appearance on the Kearsney Tennis scene which augurs well for the future oftennis at the College. NATALREPRASENTATIVES Five of our boys participated in a miniinterprovincial held in Pretoria over the weekend 8,9and 10 September. C Farquharson and S Coetzee represented the Natal Ul6 team and S Alexander,M Krog and M Hobson represented the Natal Ul4 team. The Natal Ul4 team won the tournament and the Ul6 team came second. Gauteng North, Gauteng East and Mpumalanga were the other parricipating provinces. SOUTH AFRICAN REPRESENTATION Christian Coetzee represented SA(Ul4 level)at various ITF Ul4tournaments played in Europe. He was away for 7 weeks in toral. All the tournaments were played on clay and he initially found the going rather rough as he was playing against the best in the world and on foreign surfaces but soon settled down and gained some valuable experience. »AWILLOWS 135
