Prof. NigelCH Stott(1951 - 1956) CBE BSc MBCh B FRCGP FRCPE EMed Sci. Emeritus Professor-University ofWales College of Medicine (1951-1956) was awarded the Commander of the British Empire : Queens Birthday Honours 2001 and Foundation Fellow of The Academy of Medical Sciences 1999Current Portfolio ofduties: Elected member - of General Medical Council 1999-2004 Deputy Chairman - GMC Committee on Professional Performance Chairman - Reference Group for the Primary Care Strategy for Wales Member - MRC Health Services and Public Health Research Board Research Consultant - UWCM I retired from the University 18 months ago to give me time to adopt a more strategic portfolio of work for the next lap of my working life. The GMC is at a critically important stage of its development with restructuring ofthe council and the introduction ofquinquennial revalidation for all doctors by 2003. My involvement as cochairman of the Committee on Professional Performance also involves me heavily in the assessment and(hopefully)restoration/retraining of doctors whose performance has fallen below the expected standards set by the GMC. The MRC is the major funding body for medical research in the UKand I am involved in assessing research applications from outstanding teams of researchers in the field of Health Services and Public Health Research. We then rank them in order ofscientific merit before funding decisions are taken. This involves millions of pounds every year in research grants. The applicants come from all over the world but most are UK based. The National Assembly for Wales has responsibility for all health and social services and the Minister of Health and Social Services asked me to lead the development of an innovative and forward looking strategy for the development of Primary Care in Wales. This work will be completed by the turn of 2001 when it will progress to operational phase. Finally, I am much involved in Church and charitable work in my local community and with some research consultancies. Adrian Pilling (1973 - 1977) from the same vintage {'15-11) was awarded the "Pilot of The Year" award from the South African Aero Club - in recognition of his achievement at the 2nd World Air Games in Spain, where he came 3rd and received an individual bronze medal. This is the highest achievement by a South African Pilot in this sport ever. He has been elected captain of the national team to the World Precision Flying Championships in Croatia in 2002. GRAHAM CLARK FUNDRAISING RAFFLE David Bachelor ('75) designed and manufactured a beautiful bracelet, which was raffled to raise funds for Graham Clark(75)to acquire a Kombi equipped to allow for Graham's disabilities. The raffle raised approximately R 15 000 and was won by Richard Barrow('75) Graham sent a message of thanks from which we quote: "I would also like to go out to all of the special schools and assist those that are unable to speak. Hopefully I can help motivate the children so they also reach out and get as much from life as they possibly can. This generous donation has certainly shown me that there is a light at the end ofthe tunnel and that I must continue with my dream. Thanks very much everybody."
