Chronicle-2001

Michael Lewlyn Phillips (1983-1986) On the 13th June 2001 Michael was tragically killed when his car left the road, notfarfrom his home in Umhlali. Michael was born and brought up in Hillcrest where he attended Highbury and later Kearsney. Having represented South African Schools at hockey,he continued to keep his hand in the game and was instrumental in making the annual Old Boys vs the School hockey match, held on Founder's Weekend, what it is today. Fittingly the trophy for this event is now dedicated to his memory. Michael's commitment to his school and friends resulted in his election as Chairman ofKearsney Old Boys' Dolphin Coast branch,a position he held until his untimely death. How fitting it is that his memorial service was held at Kearsney, a place that meant so much to him.Michael was involved in property for several years before he married Bridgitte and settled in Umhlali, to pursue a farming career. Not long thereafter, both were blessed with the arrival ofGeorgina, their precious daughter. Michael was a man of absolute integrity who lived and loved life with passion. He will be remembered for his commitment to his family and friends and sadly missed by all ofthose who knew him. Craig Coetzee(1983-1986) Craig Robbins Milstead (1996 - 2001) Craig started his schooling at Umhlali Primary School then moved on to Highbury.Being a keen sportsman, Craig captained the U13A rugby side and was awarded his rugby colours. He also won Victrix Ludorum at athletics. 1 I Craig's sporting achievements continued at Kearsney. His love of rugby was rewarded with Natal Schools'representation and at athletics he won the 100m and 200m. Although so keen on sport, Craig's greatest ability was with people. He had time for everyone and amongst his friends at Kearsney were members ofthe ground, house and kitchen staff, juniors and seniors. His loyalty to his friends was legendary. Before his tragic death, Craig was studying 162 BCom.at Durban University and had passed his mid-year exams. Craig will be remembered by all who knew him for his open, friendly manner and his love oflife. Although he died at such a young age, he had touched the lives of many. He will be sorely missed by his friends and family. We love you Craig. The Milstead family. Ebrahim Hansa(1983- 1987) Tragically killed as a result of a hijacking in Cape Town in June 2001. Ebrahim qualified as a neurosurgeon and was practising in Cape Town. James Charter(1937) Jimmy,as he wasfondly known, was a loyal and most active Kearsney Old Boy from the day he left the Old Kearsney in Stanger. Jimmy served his country during WWII,along with Jimmy Hopkins and Ben Milner, as Engineers (the Sappers). Together they swept many a minefield. After the war he,along with AB Theunissen('31),founded the Johannesburg branch of the KCOBC,which has since been arguably the most active ofall the branches over the years. He went on to become President ofthe Old Boys'Club.Jimmy also served on the Kearsney College Board of Governors for 18 years. Jimmy enjoyed a successful business career as an agent for a prominent American tooling company. He retired to his home at Sheffield on the North Coast, where he served as President of the Umhlali Country Club.Jimmy was a regular attendee of functions hosted by the Dolphin Coast branch ofthe KCOBC. A fond hobby ofJimmy's was the collection and caring of his Aston Martin and MG6C vintage cars. I will always remember Jimmy as a true gentleman and example to all Kearsney Old Boys.
