BBANrH mwiit DURBAN BRANCH REPORT Since taking over from Alistair Hipkin last year we held a Christmas Function for Old Boys and their wives at the Point Yacht Club. The Durban Branch sponsored the food. Approximately 30 people attended. We intend to make this an annual function and I expect it to get better support this year. Thanks to Darryl Cheek for arranging the venue and snacks. The Mr Price Touch Rugby Tournament was held on the 3rd June at the school. This event was very well attended and I can see it becoming a very popular event. The event was organised by the Parents' Committee with the assistance of the Durban Branch of the Old Boys. Many thanks to Gavin Melvill and his team, the masters from the school and all Old Boys concerned. The idea behind this was to raise money in conjunction with the Chris Burger PetraJackson Fund. A youngster from Port Shepstone by the name ofQuinton van Jaarsveld was pinpointed to receive the money raised. He was paralysed in a mgby match last year. Just over R12,000.00 was raised and presented to Quinton on Wednesday last just before the Old Crocks Rugby Match by Jeremy Thompson from Mr Price. A very big thank you to Mr Price and all other companies who helped sponsor rhis event. As a matter ofinterest, Quinton's medical bills have reached Rim this year. R12,000.00 was raisedand presented to Quinton. The Old Boys Dinner hosted by the Durban branch was held last night. Over 250 people attended and it was a great success. My thanks to the Committee for all their work. As far as the last Thursday ofthe month "Gettogethers" are concerned, having it at the Greyhound each month doesn't attract Old Boys from Durban. It is suggested that we alternate it between the Greyhound and possibly Berea Rovers. I will be having a Committee meeting the near furure to discuss this in issue. In closing I would like to thank Colleen Ross on a very well organised new boys'open weekend. Thanks to Gavin Bester on his support in helping me with organising the different functions over the year. »AAARTINCORFE SOUTH COAST BRANCH REPORT A gathering was arranged at the Riverbend Croc Farm hosted by Howard Kelly. We had the usual old stalwarts attending such asJannie ands Bertha Storm, Wally Brass, Bob Mirchell and Paul Cole. Attendance from the younger contingent was, once again, disappointing. A surprise visitor was however John Crickmay,a colleague of mine and now retired attorney. I am however pleased to report that we have unearthed an Old Boyfrom 1931 who responded to our notice in The South Coast Herald and telephoned me on Tuesday evening. The gentleman is Arthur Wood who attended the Old Kearsney for two years and as far as his recollection goes he left in 1931. I have known Arthur for a number of years having attended the same Church not realising that he is a Kearsney Old Boy! I am sure that he is nowhere reflected on the school's Old Boys database. Arthur attended our meeting and I have loaned him a copy of Opportunities Seized so that he can take a trip down memory lane as far as the old Kearsney is concerned. Arthur also addressed us about his days at the old Kearsney and came up with some amusing anecdotes one of which was flying drones(bees)on pieces of cotton in the old Chapel. I will do my best to arrange for Arthur to be at Founders' Day, particularly because it happens it is the 10 year anniversary ofthe I94Ts etc. I would appreciate it if we are able to trace any other Old Boys from 1931. Furthermore Arthur knows Elwyn van den Aardweg'sfamilyfrom his days in Pretoria having attended the Baptist Church there. Other than that, a fine social evening was held and we have decided to rotate the venues in future and to delegate two chaps from Port Shepstone,Port Edward and possibly Scottburgh to arrange quarterly functions. »WG ROBINSON >■ dn' 166
