Chronicle-2001

CAPE TOWN BRANCH REPORT WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEETING The first quarter was a period ofrebuilding for the Cape Town Whippets as Whippet attendance at monthly meetings had dropped towards the end of last year. The focus was on getting the Whippets to meetings, sharing Kearsney news and fellowship and involving them in the planning ofthe events for the year,in an attempt to get them excited about being part ofthe Cape Town Old Boys. Numbers are up again and we will maintain and improve on them during the remainder ofthe year. The Old Boys Braai was once again held at Doug Howieson's house on Saturday 19 May. As it was the Sharks/Cats Super 12 Semi-Final,time was first spent around the big screen and then around the braai. The event was enjoyed by all, and I would like to thank Doug and Beth Howieson, for once again, opening their home to the Old Boys and hosting the event. The GolfDay that was supposed to take place on the 21 July had to be postponed due to the fact that no courses were available, and we will look to hold the event towards the end of the year or early next year. Kearsney will be hosting this year's Annual Triangular Dinner with Hilton and Michaelhouse. The dinner was postponned to coincide with the SACS Water Polo Tournament and our Headmaster and President being in Cape Town. As is customary, the final quarter ofthe year was reserved for an ad-hoc event to be decided at the end ofquarter three. I invite all of you to join us on the first Wednesday ofevery month at the UCT Club at 6p.m. if you're in Cape Town, and if you're able to attend any ofthe above-mentioned events and would like further details, please contact me on my mobile (082 576 7333) or via e-mail (roussot.j@pg.com). »JOHNROUSSOT The branch meeton the first Wednesday Evening ofeach month mainly at the Saints Old Boys' Club. Our focus has been on a big event every 3 months and to date they include the following: 1. A traditional Natal Schools' evening in November, which is an open invitation to Old Boys in all Natal Schools and gives us an opportunity in a good year, to discuss rugby results at length. 2. The Cheese and Wine in February with spouses. 3.A'Smoker Evening'in May at the Montecasino where the McGinty's barman turned out to be an Old Boy(Pembroke). 4.The Annual Dinner took place in July at the 'One and All'and Freddie Cocks entertained us at length with some hitherto unknown stories of the Kearsney way of life. Many thanks to Gavin Bester and Owen Roberts for joining us at the dinner and in aJoburg branch first.Colleen Ross also addressed the evening. EVENTS 1. The Annual GolfDay — Modderfontein on 22/11/2001. 2. The Natal Schools Evening on the 1st Wednesday in November, which is the 7th. 3. AGM-3/10/2001. We have been able to make donations to the Graham Clarke Trust. FINANCES The branch's finances are sound and we have been able to make donations to the Graham Clarke Trust to assist Graham in the purchase ofa kombi and also to the Greyhound Club to help in the re-furbishment of the pub. GENERAL In closing,I must note that in our busy lives it becomes more and more difficult to encourage many Old Boys to our functions. It is in this department that I believe the individuals play a crucial role by dragging a few schoolmates to each function. JOHANNESBURG BRANCH REPORT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The AGM was held on the first Wednesday of October last year and with some slick propaganda about a Mythical Darts Evening, a very good turnout was attained. The New Committee Elected is Garth van Rensburg(chairman),Deon Arde (vice chairman), Roy Jennings treasurer and committee members Ronnie Van Loo,Michel Harel and Lawrence Polkinghorne. Finally, the Johannesburg branch would like to congratulate the New Headmaster, Staff and Board for a wonderful job being done at the school. »GARTH VAN RENSBURG 168
