GILLINGHAM HOUSE REPORT *-Vl '7 K: ■m m tifi -v-\ m t-fj V- w .• . ^Tisui^ -• .-s, > At the House Cocktail Party at the beginning of the year,Iexpressed the enthusiasm of the matric body and their high expectations for the year. Looking back on 2001, I think the year has been a great one for Gillingham. Although we would have enjoyed winning the three top trophies,Ibelieve that we tried our best and that is all that really counts. Every boy strove to achieve high standards on the sports field and stage, and in the swimming pool. We did so in the renowned Gillingham style: never giving up and always giving of our best even when the odds are stacked against us. The traditions of House Spirit and camaraderie continue to be our hallmarks. Gillingham boys experienced many successes in the fields of academics, cultural activities. Some of our more noteworthy achievements are outlined below. ACADEMIC At Speech Day, Alyoscha Niedinger, Tiaan Schoeman, Jeremy Wilkinson andMarek Wright were awarded Academic Half-Colours. Alyoscha also received the Jack Reece Prize for Modern Languages. Ayanda Mkhize received the Zulu Prize. FredHart was awarded Academic Colours and Zane Bezuidenhout received Academic Honours. Alasdair Harris was awarded Academic Honours and received the BenJVIilner Prize for Biology while Matthew Nel was awarded Academic Honours and received the George McLeod English Essay Prize. Peter Hall received the Patrick Moore Shield andJohnKinlock Prize for Physical Science, the Art Prize and was awarded Honours Cum Laude. Peter was adjudged Proxime Accesit to Dux. At Presentation Assembly, Ross O'Neill was awarded the D&D Trophy for perseverance. The 2001 Academic Awards Assembly for Grades 8 to 11 was held in January 2002. Once again Gillingham boys did us proud. In Grade 10 Chris Paterson was awarded Half-Colours While Martin Botha, James Edgecombe and Chris Waldburger received Colours. In Grade 11 Craig Hayman, Sihle Malanda, Keiron Thwaites and Tom Vardy receivedHalf Colours, Mark Davy, John van Rooyen and Damien Westerman received Colours, and Shaheen Bramdev, Alexander Fox and Gareth Wilkinson were awarded Honours. Gillingham was runnerup to Pembroke in the Parkes Trophy competition. At the Science Expo, Chris Paterson achieved second place and best in category. Roscoe Kleinloog also attained a second place. Mark Davy reached the second round of the Science Olympiad. Philip Damjanovic won a gold medal in the De Beer's English Olympiad, having been placed in the Top 100 in the country. Craig Hayman won a silver medal and Alexander Fox a bronze medal in the same competition. Neil Hendry was in the top ten of the Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad and both he and Clark Buys were awarded gold medals by AMESA. 37
