CULTURAL In the cultural sphere,a number ofGillingham boys were stalwarts in the choir and orchestra. Cultural Colours were awarded to Matthew Nel (re-award)and Keiron Thwaites, while Gregg Grobler received Drama Colours and Alexander Fox was awarded Debaring Colours. Thanduhlanga Tshume was awarded both Music Honours and Cultural Honours. Gillingham was placed third in interhouse music, second in interhouse debating and second in interhouse plays. Cole Conway played in the Kwazulu-Natal Youth Orchestra and Thanduhlanga Tshume sang in the Kwazulu-Natal Youth Choir. SPORT Several Gillingham boys excelled in the sports arena and deserve special mention. In athletics, Gareth Wilkinson represented Kwazulu-Natal Schools at the SA Championships and was awarded Athletics Honours. In cricker, Greg Fotheringham was selected for the Kingsmead Mynahs. His cousin, Lloyd Madsen was selected for rhePG Bison U15A XI. Wayne Madsen played for the Kwazulu-Natal U19A XI and was awarded Cricket Honours. He also received the Foss Bat for the most improved cricketer in the school. Andrew Perkins was awarded Cricket Honours and selected for the Kwazulu-Natal U19B XI. In cross country, Alasdair Harris was the open individual winner and was awarded the Phillips Trophy. The Madsen brothers also excelled on the hockey field. Lloyd was selected for the Kwazulu-Natal U16A XI, while Wayne was selected for both the Kwazulu-Natal U19A XIand the SA Schools U19B XI,and was awarded Hockey Honours. He also received the 1980 Cup for the outstanding player in the 1st XL In rugby. Roan Heming was selected for the Kwazulu-Natal U17 Elite Squad and in sailing, Tom Vardy was awarded Colours. Ayanda Mkhize and Nicholas Roberts were among the first three Kearsney boys to be awarded Colours for soccer. In squash,Alexander Fox received the Carrington Trophy for the most improved player. In tennis,Cuan Farquharson was selected for the Kwazulu-Natal U16A team. Coll Salver for rhe senior doubles champions. In warerpolo, Fred Hart was selected for Kwazulu-Naral Under ISA side and was reawarded Warerpolo Honours. At the end ofthe year, Fred was selected for the South African Schools side, which played in Ausrralia in December.Julian Sinclair was selected for the Kwazulu-Natal U16A team,David Nelson for the Kwazulu-Natal U16A and U18C teams,and Clark Buys for the Kwazulu-Natal U14A team. Derek Brunskill received Colours. Ourside school,Dylan and Travis Campbell were members of the Ul4 and Ul6 cycle teams and the Kwazulu-Natal Ul4 and U17 triathlon teams.Jean-Luc Mauvis represented the Central Kwazulu-Natal Life Saving team and, among other awards, won a silver medal for Malibu Board at the SA Championships. BruceJohnson qualified as a lifeguard by gaining his Surf Proficiency Award. Dale Taylor was selected for the Ul6SA polo team. SPIRITUALAND SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE James Edgecombe,Chris Mayers, David Nelson, Christopher Paterson and Alexander Eox were confirmed during the course ofthe year. A large number of boys participated in SCA activities. Neil Hendry, Matthew Schoeder, Matthew Swart, Stuart van der Veen and JC van Dijk earned the Pilgrim Award. Denham Wicks was awarded a certificate for service to the David Hall Conservancy, Tyler Smith for service to First Aid and Rugby,Keiron Thwaites for service ro cricket, Matthew Nel and Thanduhlanga Tshume for service to Music, and Christopher Paterson for service ro Drama. At the Prize Giving for 2001 held in January 2002,Keiron Thwaites became the first boy to be awarded Honours for service to the school in recognition ofthe countless hours he has devoted to scoring for the 1st XL INTERHOUSE COMPETITIONS Once again, we experienced mixed fortunes in the various inrerhouse competitions. The highlight of the year was very definitely the Interhouse Athlerics, in which all members of the House displayed commendable teamwork, sportsmanship and commitment.Having at first been placed second, we eventually took first place after a computer error had been rectified.
