Chronicle-2001

m 0 m, SHEFFIELD HOUSE REPORT What a year it has been! We have had incredible highs and devastating lows. Sheffield was rocked by the news ofthe deaths of Nkanyezi Magubane and Craig Milstead this year. Matthew Moffatt continued his fight for his life with the entire community behind him in prayer, and was rewarded with a new heart on 16 December. Recently I asked each boy to list his achievements for the year with the intention ofdedicating a paragraph to each ofthem. It seems then that our school typist would have had to type a novel! On the sportsfield and in the classroom Sheffield boys have dominated and impressed. Christopher Hartwig led the house with maturity and dedication, enjoying excellent support from Matt Stevens and the rest of the prefect body. The marries were responsible for our excellent results. We finished second to Pembroke in the interhouse competition, and second in the Parkes Trophy. Sadly we lost the services of Mike Werth who moved to Clifton College. Mike had been an excellent assistant housemaster; dedicated, efficient and much respected by the boys. We wish him every success in his new school.Graeme Spring accepted a post at Pretoria Boys' High. Our thanks go to him for stepping into the breach when Gary Collins resigned as assistant housemaster, and for the hard work he put into the hostel. We wish him every success as he embarks on his new career. Graeme and Mike will be replaced in the New Year by Adam Rogers, our new English master, and Sibusiso Ncamani, Kearsney's intern. I have tried to create a family atmosphere in Sheffield house this year and the boys have responded wonderfully. Discipline, I believe, should come from the individual, and my staff and prefects have given guidance in that sphere. The end result is a vibrant house, filled with talented, growing and mature individuals with very definite goals in life. I hope to build on this strength in the New Year. The end result is a vibrant house, filled with talented, growing and mature individuals. To you,the parents I thank you for your positive contribution this year. Your requests have been vety reasonable; your support for your sons unwavering and your encouragement much appreciated. We said goodbye to two boys in the house this year: Sean Mackay and Ross Fitzgerald. It is very unfortunate to lose boys of this calibre. I wish them every success in their new schools. Thanks must go to my prefects who have done sterling work; to my matron, Tiko Govender who has been wonderful. She runs the house efficiently, listens to the boys' problems and ensures that our house is kept spick and span. Many thanks, Tiko! To my duty staff fi thank you for all the hours you have contributed. You have led by example and have shown dedication and care beyond the call of duty. To my wife Ota and my children Benji and Marieke - thank you for your love and support this year. I look forward to 2002 where a new crop of prefects and Sheffield citizens will attempt to make their mark. There is much potential out there which needs to be fulfilled and I will watch with interest as our Sheffield boys grow into fine young men. AVAN ZYL HOUSEAAASTER 43
