The Middle School is up and running and, here too, some excellent results were achieved and new challenges met in the Art Department. The practical work (including painting, drawing, ceramics and design), the art appreciation, research and project writing was well handled by the Grade 8's and 9's. The Electives too, where the researching, designing and building in clay, of houses(Grade 8)and vintage cars (Grade 9)was also a great success, and seemed to be thoroughly enjoyed by the majority ofthe boys. This is linked to the educational trend, which from now on puts art, music and drama together and calls it "Arts and Culture". It is something new and will focus more and more on individual creativity, innovative and lateral thinking as well as being more critically involved in the arts and cultural processes and products, and the communication skills involved in all of them. This will be part of what is involved in the common Grade 9 exams of the future. C TULLIDGE V m /k M PHALL Year work 53
